Salzburg to Bern - cost of rail tickets

I will book for 2 adults (seniors) Salzburg to Bern for travel on May 15 2014. Cost from www.oebb.at seems to be substantially less (about $205 USD (148 euro) + cost of reservation) than from www.raileurope site ($436 USD) for the same train combination. Would cost from oebb.at site be that much less? why?

Why? Because OEBB is the train operator, and RailEurope is an expensive 3rd party reseller.

The general advice in this forum is always to buy direct, and avoid RailEurope like a plague!

Raileurope are a subsidiary of FRENCH Railways (SNCF) so can only sell the full-flex full-price 'TCV' tariff which all European national train operators can sell for any other national train operator.

They do not have a connection to OBB's own ticketing system, and cannot sell OBB's complete fare range, including the many cheaper advance-purchase fares that you'll find using www.oebb.at.

This is why it always pays to book a European journey direct with the relevant train operator.

It is actually a great deal more than the TCV tariff - even if you buy the full, standard, fully-flexible ticket on the day at the station it would cost both of you €242 ($335), and no delivery charges.

For the ticket bought in advance there are no delivery charges either, as you print it at home. Don't leave it too late, though, as the number of discounted tickets is limited per train. The cheapest tickets go long in advance (from €39 for this journey) and there are only a couple available per train).

You might be able to do this journey for cheaper if you go via Munich - use a Bayern Ticket Salzburg - Munich (€27 for both of you, buy on the day), then there is more availability of cheaper tickets from Munich to Bern (from €39).

You can get this trip from Salzburg to Bern even for EUR 78 if you travel via Munich bought through DB (German Rail). The connections via Munich mean however 1-2 train changes more.
