Most interesting route from bordeaux to Basel

We'd like (mum, dad and 11 year old son) to return from our weeks holiday in France using rail and air. We can fly back from Basel and our start point would be Bordeaux. Any thoughts on the most interesting route? We've 3 or 4 days to do the trip so we'll include a couple of overnight stops. Cost is an issue so inexpensive options are of special interest.

The fastest train route goes via Paris, with possible stops including Angouleme, Poitiers (or Futuroscope station for the theme park there), St Pierre de Corps ( for Tours - five minutes away by frequent connecting trains), Paris and Dijon or Strasbourg. Many trains run non-stop from Bordeaux to Paris, so the service to intermediate stations is less frequent.

A slightly slower and possibly more interesting route avoids Paris, with possible stops including Carcassonne, Beziers, Montpellier, Nimes. Valence, Lyon, Dijon, Besancon and Mulhouse.

The southern route would be better IMHO as any of those towns or cities is worth a stop. Don't forget that each section of the trip needs to be booked with separate tickets as reservation is either compulsory or very strngly recommended, except for very short hops eg Beziers to Montpellier which can be easily done using regional trains (TER) which do not have reservations or reductions for buying tickets in advance.

Check timetables carefully,

If you want to keep things flexible without tieing yourselves to advance booking on specific TGV or Intercites trains that require reservations would also be the shortest. From Bordeaux to Limoges, then to Vierzon, Nevers, throuh Burgundy to Dijon and finally throm there to Mulhouse using the "old" line though Besancon along the Doubs valley. That would all be through attractive, varied and in parts spectacular scenery. By the way, unles you positively want to visit Basel, accommodation would be cheaper in Mulhouse, getting to the airport almost as easy and you would not have to worry about hving to get any Swiss francs..
