Train pass for 2 for total of 20 days in Spain and Portugal.

Hi,

Looking for train pass to use arounfd Spain and Portugal fo about 3 weeks max. Will start from Barcelona to south of Spain (Sevile, Valencia..) and finish in Madrid..Pass will be for 2 people. We used to rent a car when in France and Italy, but where with complete family so was better option. Any suggestion..Travel will be in September..

There is no train pass that will be worthwhile. All the fast trains in Spain have compulsory seat reservations that are not included with a pass, so you have to make the reservations and pay extra for them.

In Spain, you get the best price by buying soon after tickets go on sale, usually 62 days before travel, direct from www.renfe.com

If you pre-plan and pre-book each trip, the advance-purchase Promo fares are the cheapest option, e.g Madrid-Seville from 28 euros.

If you want to stay flexible, a Spain pass covers a certain number of trips, it works out more than the 28 euro promo fare but less than the 80 euros you'd pay for a ticket on the day at the Flexible rate.

I will add that there is also no type of train pass that is worthwhile for Portugal. Again, reservations are compulsory for all long distance trains which your pass will not include and for which a fee is payable.

Portugal railways are currently offering a 40% discount for tickets booked 5 days or more in advance. That means, for example, Albufeira - Lisbon for me next month 1st class €15,50. Not bad for 300km journey.

Tickets for long distance trains can be purchased on line up to 60 days in advance at www.cp,pt

Tickets for regional and suburban commuter trains cannot be purchased other than at a railway station on the day of travel. These are very cheap.

Also check carefully the very limited options for train travel between Spain and Portugal. There is only one train a day out of Madrid etc towards Portugal (it runs overnight) for which reservations are absolutely essential. These are made on the Spanish Railways website www.renfe.com as they run the trains.
