If you had come to this forum before buying a Eurail pass, most of us here would advise you against buying one, especially as you are travelling in France and Italy. Most of the French TGV trains require mandatory reservation at the station, plus an additional cost. That also does not guarantee you boarding, since the seats are quota controlled for passholders. In Italy, it is slightly better, since you can reserve online at an additional €10 for the high speed trains, and €8 for Intercity trains.

For your travels, the journey with the least number of transfers would require a change in Basel and Milan.

The portion from Strasbourg to Basel, the pass should be okay.

The journey from Basel to Milan, if on the EuroCity, you need to reserve at the station, at what cost I have no idea. If you had purchased this Basel to Milan EuroCity ticket, the cost is only €22 pre-booking with www.sbb.ch.

The journey from Milan to Venice, pre-book and reserve with www.trenitalia.com. Again, if you had purchased this ticket online, the cost is roughly €19 pre-booking early.

I would recommend returning the Eurail pass for a refund, but do your maths to see how much you lose from the penalty fee.

The reservation fee from Basel to Milan should be around 12 CHF, as it is certainly €10 in the reverse direction.

To reserve from Milano Centrale to Venezia Mestre on www.trenitalia.com select the UK flag first, and after choosing your train select 'View other fares and services', click Continue, then select the arrow in the Offer column to reveal a drop-down menu on which you must select Global Pass.

The advance fare for this latter journey, including reservation, starts off at €9, less than the separate reservation price of €10. Of course the cheapest advance fares do sometimes sell out fairly fast.
