Train London to York

Traveling on arrival in London, to York and wonder if we can purchase tickets with a seat reservation online. Pick up at station? Is there a special line? Kings Cross is very busy and lines looked very long.

Always appreciate suggestions if there's a better way to do this.

Yes you can. East Coast is the operator so you will need their website www.eastcoast.co.uk or any of the train operating companies. The one to avoid is the trainline as this charges a surcharge for using their services. As part of the on line booking process you are asked if you wish to reserve a seat. If you do then proceed with this and it is a good idea as the route is busy. You collect your tickets at the station from one of the machines in the booking hall. Insert your credit card for identification and then enter your booking reference. The machine will then issue your tickets and seat reservation coupons. Its no hassle and easy to do as the machines are prominent . Seat reservation coupons are handy to keep as you may need to produce them on demand as they are sometimes used to check that you are on the right train. Also handy if someone is sitting in your seat.

It is worth booking in advance to ensure you get seats as well as the best fares. In Europe walk up fares are sold on the day and are valid on any train. Trains on your route will have so many seats that are unreserved for such a purpose. Walk up fares are not the best ad can be a gamble as to whether you will actually get a seat.

www.eastcoast.co.uk; there are also a few services operated by Grand Central Trains, which you can buy from East Coast website as well.

Collect from a ticket machine or counter at any major station (doesn't have to be Kings Cross) or I think print-at-home options will be available on this route.

Note you cannot collect from Heathrow.

"Advance" tickets are released about 12 weeks before date of travel, at various price points; the cheapest ones sell out first and quickly. They are valid on booked train ONLY. Allow ample time if arriving in London by air before the train departure time. If you miss the train you will have to buy a full fare walk-up ticket.
