Amtrak Portland OR to Harrisburg PA round trip

We've taken the Empire Builder and Coast Starlight in the past. This trip requires multiple trains. We don't intend on making any sightseeing stopovers on the way. Dare I make ticketing arrangements myself or would I be advised to involve a travel agent?

Most travel agents know little to nothing about Amtrak unless you get a train travel specialist and what is worse they often give out wrong information. Amtrak.com or Amtrak agents at 1-800-USA-RAIL are all you need.

With all the eastbound Empire Builder connections at Chicago severed except the Lake Shore Limited due to the Builder's current timekeeping issues, your only available routing is to go south on the Coast Starlight to Sacramento, California Zephyr to Chicago, Capitol Limited to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvanian to Harrisburg. If you were willing to overnight in Chicago, you could take the Empire Builder, lay over, then get on the Capitol Limited. That actually would take roughly the same amount of time as going via Sacramento, since they both involve an extra night.

Zephyr has pegged it: Travel agents no absolutely nothing about Amtrak. Go to www.amtrak.com and look at your options. From Portlad to Chicago on the Empire Builder. Layover 24 hour in Chicago ( more time if you have it. Chicago is a wonderful place to stretch your legs). If you put CHI to HAR in the ticket search engine you will find the two segments layer out for you. Then call Amtrak and speak to an agent to purchase your tickets.

Thanks for the information. Amtrak has alerts about potential long delays on the Empire Builder so I'm not going to consider it. I like the idea of taking the Coast Starlight to Sacramento and changing to the Zephyr, etc. Ideally I had thought, for the cross country leg, it would be great to take a different route coming and going, but not sure that it makes sense. We do not plan any stopovers, so hope connections go okay. I've been on trains that arrived on time, early and late, so will hope all goes well.

Another option for the return trip may be to take the Southwest Chief to LA and switch to the Coast Starlight.Leaves Chicago at 3 PM, and arrives in LA two days later at 815 AM. The Coast Starlight leaves at 1010 AM.
