Driving from Tracy, CA to Cornville, AZ Where to stay night

My parents and I will be driving to Cornville, AZ in November. We want to stop for the night along the way, as driving straight through will be too much on all of us. Unfortunately, the 1/2 way point will be on I-40 where apparently is not somewhere to stay until Needles,CA.. My dad suggested Needles or Kingman, AZ..

Would like opinions on which city you think, and suggestions on place to stay night. Thank you in advance for your input.

Needles has mostly old, dilapidated motels; it's not a very good choice of where to stay. I think Laughlin, Nevada is a better choice, because there are larger and newer hotels there, due to the fact that it's in Nevada so they have gambling. You might be able to get a cheap hotel room there. If you didn't want to drive that far the first day, Barstow might be another choice, though it's not much of a town, in my opinion, at least it would be a place to sleep that night.

Hi Teri, and I'm glad you got the blue hyperlink referral to the Road Trip forum. Welcome!

Given a choice between Needles and Kingman, Kingman is the better choice in my book. Everything costs less for the traveler there. . . lodging, food, and especially fuel.

I can personally recommend the Motel 6 (East) exit 53 (Andy Devine Avenue/Route 66) off Interstate 40. Head north (left) and it's on the left up a bit. Low cost for the room, and great location for restaurants and fuel. Rooms are in great condition, too.

Laughlin is more miles out of your way, but certainly an available option. Bullhead City across from Laughlin is also a place to consider for all traveler services.

I've made the trip many times and usually stay in Motel 6, since I'm just needing a place to get some rest. None of these towns are great destinations, but rather just a stopover. I've stayed the night in Kingman, Needles, Barstow and Mojave. If you do want something to do, take the sidetrip to Laughlin and stay at a casino.

Don't buy fuel in Needles! It can literally be one dollar per gallon more than in AZ. If you need gas near Needles (and you are staying on I-40), drive a few more miles to exit #9 in AZ (9 miles inside AZ). Or wait until Kingman.

Another vote for Kingman. A pleasant town . Maybe try Best Western Wayfarers. But it's long drive from Tracy indeed. In Laughlin I'd recommend Golden Nugget. South of Laughlin between Needles and Laughlin is The Avi resort. From The Avi you can cross Colorado River and take R66 via Oatman and Sitgreaves pass te Kingman next day. That's a very nice drive.

Absolutely yes, Janss. Absolutely. I HATE highway robbery, and highway robbers. . . grrrrr. . .

I have never understood why Needles ever does this when Kingman is so reasonable. How do those folks who gouge so much stay in business?!?!?! Just stay away from getting fuel at Needles!!!

And stay away from that Exit 9 fuel, too. Loves and Valero of late charge around 20 or 30 cents a gallon more than Flying J in Kingman. Fine if you are Lake Havasu bound. . . but a dollar killer for a fillup if you are headed for Kingman.

While I'm on the subject of fuel and prices along your route on the way. . .

Stay away, stay FAR away from the ARCO in Barstow (east Main Street exit as you head out east on I-40) Another gouger. Flying J in Lenwood is much better for price, and newer and cleaner too. Mojave has recently come down on prices lately, fyi.

Check out gasbuddy.com for prices in the United States, state by state, and by community.

Thank you very much for your replies. Looks like Kingman it is. And thanks for the heads up on the fuel prices.

Maybe stop for something to eat and drink east of Barstow at Bagdad Cafe in Newberry Springs (you'll have to leave the interstate f40 for a short distance). O, and just in case, there's a motel in Ludlow but I've never stayed.
