Road Trip from Virginia To West Coast

A few friends and I are doing a summer road trip across the country, and would like suggestions on where to stop. We're looking for fun landmarks, interesting stops, just anything that is something worth seeing/staying near. Any suggestions would be welcome whether it be food, hotels, attractions, anything! Thank you so much!

Take a look at

www.roadtripamerica.com

and

www.drivingcrosscountry.net

for some good ideas and routes.

It would help to know a few facts about your planned trip. How long will you be travelling? When? What part of the West Coast? Camping? The more input you give, the more complete your help can be. Happy planning!

Well we haven't decided how long yet, but I'm assuming at least 2 weeks. We're up for anything, camping, hiking, sleeping in the car, anything that just gets us across the country and back. Our final stop will be Ventura California, and we'll hit up LA and Venice Beach while we're there. I know the Grand Canyon is an option, so we'll probably do that, but that's a far as we've gotten for planning wise.

Thanks for the sites!

You are looking at an 5500-6000 miles roundtrip in 2 weeks. Visiting LA from Ventura is possible but count on traffic jams on your way. You definitely need a reservation for GC www.grandcanyonlodges.com Driving I40 you'll find many places of R66 along that route.

Two weeks for the round trip? I think you should take a look at either mapquest.com or googlemaps to get a better idea of the driving hours.

It's about 2,600 miles one way.

If you average 65 MPH, it will take you about 40 hours of driving.

If you drive 7 hours each and every day, it will take you nearly 6 days to get there.

That is not counting any food, fuel or facilities stops.

So 6 days one way ... 2 days there ... 6 days back?

In real life an average of 55/60 mph will be more realistic with the stops, traffic and roadworks.
