Providence RI to Montreal - mini 3 day road trip

We will be in Rhode Island next month and would like to take a mini road trip to visit Montreal. I'm not familiar with the roads back east. Is it easy driving? What's the best route? Or, should we make it a drive & train trip? We did this when we went to Boston and New York and it worked out great. We parked the car at the station and took the train which dropped us off downtown.

I hear Montreal is easy walking and you don't really need a car. Wonder if the train would be a good option.

Going from RI to Montreal is an easy ride in eight to nine hours depending on traffic, heading north on 95 then to 93 north, then 89 north, signs in Quebec to Montreal, but get a mapquest list of directions, or gps, or a paper map. Montreal is easily navigated. A car makes this trip faster than the train from NYC or Springfield. Try to stay in the old city, good deals next mo. on hotels.com or other travel sites for hotels.
