Read This First: Welcome to the Road Trips Forum!

Welcome!

This Road Trips forum is for those who want to learn about a region by driving through it, experiencing the attractions, communities, and local culture first-hand. Here, we share suggestions, ideas, and tips known by locals or those who have already made the trip.

To get the most out of this forum, please take a few minutes to include some basic information in your initial forum post. Including the answers to the questions below will allow other travelers and Destination Experts to provide much more meaningful advice more quickly.

1. When are you traveling? – Time of year can make a difference on road conditions, weather, and may include major holidays that travelers may want to embrace or avoid.

2. What are your interests? – Would you rather hike in the mountains or sunbathe on a beach? Golf or visit museums? Cities or the country? Historical sites or amusement parks? You get the idea.

3. Who will be traveling with you and what are their ages? Does anyone have mobility issues? – This helps suggest age-appropriate destinations or activities.

4. How long are you willing to spend in a car each day? – For some countries, the travel distances can be great, and 8-12 hour travel days may be required to get from one destination to another. If that’s not for you, say so.

5. Do you have a list of “Must See” places and a list of “Nice to See” places? Often there isn't enough time to see all the things that we want, so a prioritized list will help. If you don’t have a list yet and are just looking for initial ideas or suggestions, that’s okay.

6. Which is more important: Hitting all of your “Must See” locations even if it means 8-12 hour driving days, or sticking to a rigid maximum 6 hour driving day and omitting a “Must See” location or two?

7. What is your budget for the trip? – How much are you willing to spend each day for lodging, meals, fuel, activities (e.g., amusement parks, museums, sporting events, etc.)?

Fellow travelers and Destination Experts can only provide you with suggestions, and it will be up to you to develop your final road trip itinerary based on your own research, travel preferences, and desires.

Enjoy your planning and exploring!

1. We spend most of 9 months away from home: at home in MO about 2-3 weeks in May and the months of Nov/Dec.

2. Interests RVing, 170,000 miles in a 1999 Motorhome bought when my wife retired.

We spend the summers in the mountains of Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, and Utah riding a pair of ATVs. I also trout fish. Last summer we dry-camped in National Parks, Forest Service campgrounds, etc for 53 nights. In the winter our favorite place is Palm Springs, CA at a luxury rv resort. Have also wintered in Arizona, Texas and Florida. We will try most anything once.

4. A day of travel is sometimes 2 hours, but most of the time 5-6 hours and maybe once in a while 8 hours.

5. We have been to all 50 states: MUST SEES in our great USA, not in any particular order.

Sunrise/sunset at Grand Canyon, Redwoods any park, New York City, Mackinaw Island, Tetons, Yellowstone, Crater Lake in OR, San Fransisco, Key West FL, San Antonio, Santa Fe NM, Rocky Mountain National Park, never drive by a presidential library, Gettysburg National Park, Washington DC, Thousand Islands in upper New York, the boatride out of Lewiston ID down the Snake River, Hwy 1 down the OR/CA coast, Branson MO. I must stop--we have been blessed.

6. Be flexible and enjoy the serendipity of it all.

7. Dollarwise we spend on average around $3,000 monthly that includes meals, fuel and camping fees.

Hi everyone.

This Sticky is meant to be read to help you put together your questions in a new thread, not replied to as a number of posters, a few who are new so it's understandable, have with questions.

The forum DEs don't monitor this thread ( may need to see if we can close it) so if you want to ask for help for a trip, please once you have read this, can you post a new thread. Just click on the ask a question button on the forum home page and away you go.

If the last few posters do this, and simply copy their questions to new threads, we'd be happy to help : ).

Hi Valiants,

Thanks for the explanation for folks... I actually do keep an eye on this post and when I see that someone has asked for help here, I send them a PM explaining how to start their own topic / thread.

But I agree, it may be time to prevent others from posting here.

Zed
