Napa Valley to Grand Canyon May 2013

Hello

I love this site, have only just come across a the road trips forum what a great idea.

Have been reading lots of the post here, and my trip is quite small in comparison.

We have accommodation booked in Napa and the Grand Canyon.

We have 6 days to drive between the two places.

Our budget is fairly generous (we like to be comfortable)

We are an active older couple who love to walk, Yosemite looks great but I think I have maybe left it too late to book accommodation. We really keen to see the giant trees, waterfalls ect any suggestions for routes between the two places would be very welcome.

Thanks in anticipation

Hi Kay.

Even if you can't stay in the park I'd still include Yosemite. Also, Giant Sequoia/Kings Canyon NP maybe as you probably won't get through Tioga Pass, Death Valley and what about Las Vegas?

Easy to fill 5 nights on that route, and that is without a stop say in Gold Country somewhere.

2 nights Yosemite.

1 night SEKI.

1 night Lone Pine or in Death Valley NP.

1 night Las Vegas.

Thanks for your reply

After the Grand Canyon we are going to Las Vegas for a couple of nights before flying across to New York

Hi again.

In that case I'd suggest you stay in Death Valley if you can and head to Kingman, you'll drive past LV, but you don't have to stop there. It can be done from Lone Pine but it will make it a long day with betwen 6 to 7 hours for the base trip without sightseeing in DV. It will be a couple of hours less say from Furnace Creek.

If that is too far, you could stay in Henderson or Boulder, just to the east of LV.Partly depends if you want to see Hoover dam on route too or from GCNP, and equally drive route66 from Kingman to Seligman to or from?

Hoover on way back if you go on to Kingman probably is best, if you start from Lone Pine.

Laughlin is another option instead of Kingman, it's a casino town but smack on the Colorado River and fine for a night.

Yes, it all depends on Tioga Pass being open. Last year it only opened june 18 and this year may 7. With Tioga pass open it would be easy imo:

1. Napa-Yosemite

2. Yosemite

3. Yosemite-Bishop

4. Bishop-Death Valley

5. Death Valley-Kingman

6. Kingman-Grand Canyon.

A completely different route, bypassing Yosemite and Death Valley but adding Zion and Bryce could be:

1. Napa-Lake Tahoe

2. Lake Tahoe-Tonopah

3. Tonopah-Zion

4. Zion

5. Zion-Bryce

6. Bryce-GCNP south rim.

Route below incorporates 49 which is a pleasant drive with lots of historic little towns along the route.

Day 1: Napa to Placerville; south on 49 to Angels Camp. But, before heading south, take a (short) detour north to Coloma..site of gold discovery; neat little park. Angels Camp is fun little town with lots of little shops to explore. Site of the annual frog jumping contest started by Mark twain. Winners listed on tiles in concrete sidewalk.

2: 49 to Yosemite (short drive)

3: Yosemite

4: Sequoia National Forest

5-6: 99 to 58 to I 40 to Grand Canyon (overnight Kingman or ??)

Think DAM means Sequoia Kings Canyon NP instead Sequoia National Forest.
