First road trip to the US - keen for some tips!

Hi all, we are looking at doing a road trip in the US at end of January. We need to be in Dallas for an international flight so will have about 10 days. Seems to be cheaper to pick up & drop off a car in the same place so we are thinking of a round trip from Dallas maybe Austin, Memphis, hot springs in AR, Clarkesdale, Oxford?

Keen to see quaint towns, Texas country music, and Blues, civil rights history and to stay away from places with too much snow (because we'll be driving). We'd also prefer not to just be on highways the whole time. Any suggestions would be fantastic as we are feeling a bit overwhelmed with what we could do! Already been to New Orleans. Many thanks.

Dallas is not an ideal departure point for a trip as its mainly prairie/plains around it and 10 days is very little time. The route you suggest may be your best option but use gmaps and spend some time poking at the area more.

how about heading west instead? Over to Carlsbad Caverns, the Bosque del Apache, Palo Duro State Park and back down to Dallas.

Or Big Bend NP maybe if you headed west, San Antonio on the way back?.

Hi and welcome,

Here's a possible route that takes in some of your stated interests that could be done in 10 days of driving (but you'll be driving most every day). It has a mix of highways (to get you to/from your general area of interest quickly) and secondary roads (to see the smaller towns and sights).

Day 1 - Dallas to Natchez (about 8 hours intended to be a fast drive to get you in position for a more leisurely drive through the South)

Day 2 - Drive Natchez Trace Parkway to Tupelo; stay overnight somewhere along the way.

Day 3 - Drive Natchez Trace to Tupelo; visit Tupelo (Elvis Presley birthplace) (You could make the drive from Natchez to Tupelo in about 7 hours, if you wanted to free up a day elsewhere in the agenda.)

Day 4 - Drive to Memphis (2.5 hours); tour and overnight

Day 5 - Memphis

Day 6 - Memphis to Huntsville (about 5.5 hours)

Day 7 - Huntsville to Montgomery (about 4 hours)

Day 8 - Drive Selma to Montgomery National Trail in AM; continue to Vicksburg in PM

Day 9 - Vicksburg

Day 10 - Vicksburg to Dallas (about 8 hours intended to be a fast drive from A to B.)

Unfortunately that route takes you over the same ground on your first and last day, which I don't normally like to do, but considering your requirement to fly from DFW, it's necessary given the time constraints.

Again, this is just something as a starting point for your planning. Enjoy!
