Here''s an idea:

Day 1: Albuquerque to Chinle for Canyon de Chelly NM. With a detour and an early start you can see Petrified Forest NP first.

Day 2: Canyon de Chelly and the drive to Monument Valley

Day 3: Monument Valley tour (or in ther afternoon before) and the drive to Page for Antelope Canyon, Glen Canyon and Horseshoe Bend.

Day 4: To Grand Canyon NP south rim

Day 5: To Las Vegas

Day 6: to Los Angeles.

Make your reservations for Chinle, MV and GCNP.

Count on 5 hours between Las Vegas and Los Angeles (app 275 miles) and don't drive on a sunday afternoon.

Grand Canyon to Las Vegas is 4.5 hours and Las Vegas to LA is 4.5 hours. Does not leave a lot of time for doing anything, but Vegas is mostly a night city anyway. It's also important to note that the driving time between Las Vegas and LA greatly depends on where in Los Angeles you plan to go and the time of day you come in. Traffic is awful there, and it's best to hit the city at a certain time window. If you leave Las Vegas between 8 and 10am, then you should be okay. Or you can spend the day there and leave at about 4pm, to get in at night.

In April, the timezone changes should also be noted. Monument Valley and Antelope Canyon will be on the same time as Albuquerque, but the Grand Canyon and Glen Canyon will be an hour earlier (same as Las Vegas/Los Angeles). Important to note for your tour scheduling.

Tet's itinerary appears to have you staying in Chinle on Day 2 and in Page on Day 3. For Chinle, because there are relatively few hotels, you will need to book it in advance. For Page, you could potentially get it last minute or even just walk in, considering the time of year (pretty low-season), as there are plenty of hotels. For the cities, I would definitely book in advance, just to save some money. You'll also want to research the hotels there first.

Hope that helps.

Skip the Petrified Forest. It is an absolute disappointment. Maybe I think like that because I was expecting a forest ... of petrified wood. That's not what it is at all. Apparently all the good chunks of petrified wood long ago got carted away, so you're left with bare hills where you're supposed to imagine petrified wood once was. The Painted Desert section of Petrified Forest National Park is worth a 10-minute look-see, tops.

I would substitute into your itinerary, instead, Zion National Park. It's about two, two and one-half hours, northeast of Las Vegas. It's not far from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon (which may not even be open yet in April), and bear in mind that you can't get from the South Rim to the North Rim directly. That's why they call the canyon "Grand," because it's huge and you can't get from one side to the other via car except to swing way far east or west. But Zion would be worth it.

You have six days. You could get to L.A. from Albuquerque in two modest days of driving, so six would leave you plenty of time for seeing the sights. April is the perfect time to make that drive. Winter is over. The summer heat has not yet gotten too hot (although we are prone to nasty nasty wind storms in March and April here in Las Vegas).

There's also plenty to see between L.V. and L.A. If you have the time, go through the Mojave Preserve, just to the east of Interstate 15. There are only two lane roads through the park, but there is not much traffic, so you can make good time.

Before deciding not to go to Petrified Forest, take a look at pictures from the park website--http://www.nps.gov/pefo/photosmultimedia/photogallery.htm. I disagree that it is a disappointment. It is an amazing place and that is why it became a National Park. There is a lot of petrified wood left, just stop at the visitor center and ask where the best hikes are. But, remember to look and don't pick any up.

I agree - petrified forest certainly worth a visit, we saw plenty if petrified wood when there a few years ago! Painted desert is spectacular - certainly worth a drive through!

If you have time at Albuquerque, have a trip up Sandia peak on the 'longest aerial tramway in the world'. Quite an experience with Impressive views. Main Street at Albuquerque (rte 66) has lots of nice neon and looks great on an evening!
