The best way to see the Grand Canyon is on the ground, in the national park, at what's referred to as the South Rim. If you have multiple days, it's also best to stay at one of the park lodges. http://www.nps.gov/grca/ http://grandcanyonlodges.com/

The best heli rides are the ones from Tusayan by the south entrance to the park, NOT the ones from Las Vegas which don't fly over the main canyon. However, as already said, there's nothing to compare to standing at the edge and looking across the actual canyon, either at South Rim or North Rim. Sunset and sunrise are the best times to do that.

agreed! Stay at the south rim. Drive the section out to Desert tower-- take the shuttle to all the stops in the opposite direction. Walk partway down one of the trails into the canyon. If the park lodging is booked for your timeframe, try the lodging in Tusayan just a few miles south of the south rim.
