East Coast USA highlights drive tour help please

Hi,

We will be visiting the US from the UK over the summer and plan to drive around the East Coast.

The following is our preliminary itinerary, i would be grateful for suggestions or ideas as I am not sure whether their are better places to see or enough time has been allocated for the below;

Day One Eve - arrive in to NYC

Stay 6 nights in NYC then leave for Cape Cod (which would be the best area here)

Stay 5 nights at Cape Cod then leave to drive to Niagra.

Stay one night then leave for the Katskills Mountains.

Stay 3 nights then leave for Washington DC.

Stay for nights then back to NYC for flight next day.

We are a family of four and enjoy quite a relaxed laid back holiday usually. This will be our first driving holiday. any tips or suggestions would be appreciated, also which areas of Katskills and Cape Cod are recommended.

Hi and welcome,

I'm not sure that I can offer some of the specifics that you're seeking, but some general concerns and observations about your plan...

First, when specifically are you coming? This summer, 2013? Over the 4th of July holiday?

If you are coming this summer, I suspect that you will have difficulty finding lodging at this late point, especially on the Cape. Still, try to nail down your dates and location as soon as possible.

To me, the more scenic part of Cape Cod is from Eastham north to Provincetown. You may want to check the Cape Cod forum for recommendations there.

Second, I would recommend you re-sequence your trip. To drive from Cape Cod to Niagara Falls in one day will be a very long day.

Google Maps shows it to be about 9 hours from Cape Cod to Niagara, but traffic getting onto and off the Cape, as well as around the Boston area can be terrible. Realistically, when you throw in stops for meals, fuel, restroom breaks, and delays for traffic, I would put the trip in the 12-14 hour range.

So my recommendation would be to spend your time on Cape Cod, and then head to the Catskills (a 6-8 hour drive depending on stops and traffic). From the Catskills, you can then head to Niagara Falls (~7 hours). The drive from Niagara Falls back to DC is about 9 hours or so.

Finally, because I used to live there for a brief period, I would recommend an overnight stop in Newport, Rhode Island between NYC and Cape Cod if you can. It's an interesting historical town on Narragansett Bay with some amazing mansions to tour.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help on lodging specifics.

Enjoy your trip.

Thanks Zed, your reply is appreciated. I also looked at google maps as well this afternoon so we have reworked the order to NYC - Cape Cod - Catskills - Niagra. Then from Buffalo we will fly to WDC and then fly back to NYC. We have three weeks in total, so hopefully is will be sufficient.

Yes it is this summer, late July to mid August. I am already looking for accomodation in Cape so hopefully may find something. We were planning to stop in Newport, so happy for the recommendation. Thanks

Hi Bramblehurst,

Glad to help.

One other suggestion, rather than fly from DC back to NYC, look at taking the AMTRAK train. You have two choices:

1. The Northeast Regional ($49 or so and takes 3 h 20 m)

2. Acela Express ($149 and takes 2h 40m).

www.amtrak.com

A flight on an economy airline like Jet Blue costs $87 - $130 or so (based on a quick random check I did) and the flight takes 1h 15m to 1h 30m. Throw in the added time to get to the airport, get checked in, clear security, and fly, taking the train is probably the better option.

In the Catskills, a don't miss hike is the one to Kaaterskill Falls, the highest tiered waterfall in NYS. There are several good hikes near Big Indian - among them is Slide Mountain is the highest peak in the Catskills and is a great hike that is accessed off of County Route 47 (a scenic road that cuts over to the Liberty/Monticello area). There is great fishing and a fly fishing museum in the Roscoe/Livingston Manor area. The Blue Hole is a cold but fantastic swimming hole between Grahamsville and the Rondout reservoir. Fort Delaware museum and the Zane Grey House are a couple of interesting stops along Route 97, a very scenic route that follows the Delaware River. More chances to fish abound plus kayaking, canoeing and the like. There is great river tubing in Phoenecia. Woodstock is an upscale hippie town that many people like that gets very crowded; I prefer the more laid back charms of some of the previously mentioned towns. Sam's Point Preserve near Ellensville has some neat ice caves and there is a great hike to a beautiful waterfall - Verkeerderkill Falls.

Closer to New Paltz (and technically not in the Catskills but nearby) is Minnewaska State Park - another great place to hike or bike.

Hope this helps w/the Catskills part of the itinerary ...
