I just thought I'd post our final itinerary for our West coast road trip in late July/August to see what people thought or if we should make any slight alterations. Obviously we can't make too many as we have accommodation booked but any final suggestions would be appreciated. So here goes:
Day 1: Fly Dublin/San Francisco.( spend 3 nights near Fisherman's Wharf- San Remo Hotel) Hire car at airport (already booked)
Day 4: Drive to Yosemite NP and spend 2 nights. Accom booked in Curry Village.
Day 6: Yosemite to Vegas via Tioga Pass and Death Valley. Long drive I know but we hope to leave Yosemite early. 4 nights in MGM Grand.
Day 10: Drive to Grand Canyon via Hoover Dam. Spend 1 night in accom on Grand Canyon NP (already booked)
Day 11: Drive to San Diego, spending 7 nights in the Pacific Beach area. We plan to buy the smart destinations card for Southern California which we will use for attractions in both San Diego and LA. Again we're in 2 minds whether to go to TJ for a visit. I've posted on here before about this and gotten more negative responses than positive. We know we can't bring car into Mexico nor do we want to but we are tempted to go by bus just for a night's experience.
Day 18: Drive to LA where we will spend 4 nights. As of yet we haven't sorted accommodation for LA. We had it narrowed down to looking for a rental in Santa Monica and West Hollywood. We were leaning towards Santa Monica but have heard that its illegal for people to rent homes on short term leases in Santa Monica and the authorities are really beginning to clamp down on this so anyone who pays money for accom here does so at their own risk. We'll also have spent 7 days at the beach in San Diego so may be looking for a change of scenery. With this in mind we've decided upon West Hollywood or the Hollywood hills. I've posted on both forums in order to see which is the best location for us, somewhere near nightlife and tourist attractions and shops. We'll have a car so we can be reasonably flexible.
Days 22-26: The last leg of out trip is the trip up the West coast back to San Fran via Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Big Sur, Carmel and Monterrey along Hiway 1. This is gonna possibly be the most chilled out and flexible part of trip. No accom booked but we have 3 nights to play with to see the coast esp Big Sur which comes highly recommended. I hear Hearst Castle is worth a visit and we were also looking at maybe staying a night in Santa Barbara on the way up. I would really love to stop in Monterrey Peninsula to have a look at Pebble Beach golf course . We probably can't get in to see it but I've heard a rumour that you can get close to one of the holes via one of the beaches in Carmel. If anyone can confirm? Any other suggestions for the coastal part of the trip would be welcomed.
Day 26: Fly home from SFO to Ireland.
And that's our trip. Apologies if I've rambled a lot but wanted to get in as much info as I could. Any suggestions to improve the trip would be very welcome. We realise that in certain places we have a pretty fixed itinerary but are willing to listen to any suggestions as it's a once in a lifetime trip for us that we wanna get right.
Thanks for the help,
