Day trip around Rockford IL in July.

We are spending a weekend for a family renunion the weekend July 5th and 6th. My wife and I have a free Saturday morning/afternoon.

We have been to Lake Genava it was great but want to go to another place.

Do you have any sugestions within a hour of the Rockford area?

We can not make it a all day thing.

Thanks so much.

These suggestions are all a bit over your hour limit, but not by that much. Driving up to Madison would be an option. Or explore the scenic, rolling terrain northwest of Rockford in southern Wisconsin. New Glarus is a wonderful small town. Going south, Starved Rock State Park is nice. Devil's Lake State Park in WIsconsin is also nice, but that's a two hour drive.

Have fun.

If you are a garden lover, you could just stay in Rockford and visit the various gardens in the area. Anderson Japanese Gardens is very pleasant, as is the Klehm Arboretum. Sinnissippi Gardens is along the Rock River and has a beautiful rose garden. We haven’t been to the other gardens listed on the Great Gardens website, or the new conservatory, but I’d like to do that this summer.

Another idea is to do a mini-road trip, making a loop stopping at the Rochelle Railroad Park, Ronald Reagan’s boyhood home in Dixon, the John Deere Historic Site, climbing up the rock at Castle Rock State Park, and seeing the Blackhawk statue at Lowden State Park.

Monroe, Wisconsin is 45 minutes away. Tour a cheese factory, take a brewery tour, and eat lunch in a great old tavern.

Baumgartner's, right on a classic town square: tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g60105-d31…

Minhas Brewery, fun tour and tasting, mediocre beer: tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g60105-d31…
