First American Road Trip Ever! Detroit to...?

Hello!

We are a family of four (16,21,45 and 50 yr old) who live in Windsor, ON, Canada which is basically Detroit, MI.

We haven't taken a vacation in 4 years! and want to do an American Road Trip in the very short time we have. Our time is exactly 7 days!

What is the best road trip to take in such a short amount of time?

we're not planning on being lavish and spending a crazy amount!

Some of our possible idea were Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone, but where to stop in between?

Or even Boston, Massachusetts, but again not sure what is on the way!

Any Idea's experienced travellers?

Thanks!

If you have lived in Canada for some time ... You must have some Idea of the driving time required to merely get TO ,Yellowstone VIA the Black Hills ... I'll Suggest East, to Niagara... Cross there and drive the US 20 through the Finger Lakes area of New York State... Continue by this Scenic drive through Albany & on to Boston... Go out to Cape Cod for the day... Then start West, into the White Mtns. of New Hampshire & Vermont ... Making your way back to Canada ... carracar

Hi Georgina

Welcome to TA and the Road Trips Forum.

When do you plan on making this trip? Time of year may influence recommendations.

With only a week, your options will be limited, but you might consider a trip around Lake Michigan, hitting places like Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore; Traverse City; Mackinaw City; Mackinac Island; Sault Ste. Marie; Tahquamenon Falls; Whitefish Point; Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore; Door County, Wisconsin (the little finger that sticks out into Lake Michigan); Milwaukee; and Chicago. In fact, doing that circuit in a week might be a bit challenging.

Another option might be heading south: Indianapolis; Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky; Nashville; Great Smoky Mountains National Park; New River Gorge National River, West Virginia; Pittsburgh.

Carracar's suggestion for the New York / Boston / Cape Cod trip is a good one, too.

Let us know if any of these appeal to you, and we can provide more detail.

Great ideas!! Not enough time to do Black Hills and Yellowstone- you will need two or more weeks to drive and do that part of the west.

So I think our plan is to head out to Boston! Since its only an 11 hour drive in total, so we could do it in a day!

But what are the best places to see in between Niagara and Boston, that wont veer us too far out of our route?

We plan on making this road trip on July 16th (21st birthday present)

so very very soon!

I think my family are planning on going to Boston, and seeing what else there is to see around the Boston Area.

What are the best places to see, in and around Boston?
