Every year I plan a road trip with my sister. Just got back from this years trip to Washington state and already getting excited to start researching next years plans. However I have a lot of different ideas in my head right now and thought I might reach out for some inspiration. We go every August for 11 days, and I need to keep the trip in August. Here are the details on our prior trips:
2011: Grand Canyon, Zion NP, Lake Powell/Glen Canyon, Valley of Fire State Park.
2012: Rocky Mountain NP, Grand Teton NP, & Yellowstone.
2013: North Cascades NP, San Juan Island, Olympic NP, & Mt. Rainier.
Some of the highlights we liked best were Grand Canyon North Rim for the quaintness of the lodge and seclusion, as well as the sheer awesomeness of the GC itself. We did really love the open roads through the desert as well. We loved the short-moderate hikes in Rocky Mountain NP and really loved Grand Teton as well. Jackson was a fun city, but maybe a little over touristy. However, Mormon Row is one of my favorite places I'll never forget. Being out in those fields and taking everything in was awesome. Great fun hikes to pretty lakes in the Tetons too. Yellowstone was too touristy. It is amazing, but I learned the touristy aspect is less appealing to us. However, Winthrop in North Cascades was a favorite of ours. Touristy, but very quaint and not crowded. We like quaint lodging in the parks. Loved Roosevelt cabins in Yellowstone and cabins on the Grand Canyon Rim. It is of course not all about the lodging, but that does create the ambiance of the trip. I realized after our recent trip to Olympic that I really do like being in the park!
As far as next year, I thought maybe Columbia River Gorge down the coast and over to Crater Lake, and then Redwood NP, but we were just in Washington and I would like more variety. I want to go to Glacier eventually as well and the photos are amazing that I've seen online, but somewhat similar to North Cascades, so I'm not sure that is the right fit for next year. We enjoy pretty scenery and like driving as well. We like to do several short hikes daily, and are willing to do long ones for awesome views.
So, basically I'm hoping someone can read all that and tell me where I'm destined to travel to next year! Or just throw out some suggestions if you've been to those places and have an idea that might be good for me :).
Thank you in advance!
