Knoxville to Orlando Itinerary Ideas?

We're planning a trip from Knoxville to Disney World in June 2014. We are ultimately ending up on a Disney Cruise at the end of the holiday out of Port Canaveral, where we will also visit Kennedy Space Centre.

We are a family of 4. Two adults and two little girls - 5 & 10 years old. We are excellent long distance/roadtripers and can chew through the miles - hubby happily will drive 300 miles a day. Our basic requirements are - visit Great Smoky Mountains, a brief stop via Atlanta for the American Girl store. Inclusion of Charleston SC (for a days worth of work) if possible. We love backroads and avoid the main highways unless the surrounding countryside are super boring. We happily will spend endless days on backroads as long as they are pretty. We love mountains and small beautiful American towns!

A few years ago with the kids we drove 3500 miles over 4 weeks - basically West coast USA - Mexico to Canada border and inland to Monument Valley, Grand Canyon and Yosemite. Our very favourite places were Yosemite (most amazing place on earth), Grand Canyon Lodge, Santa Barbara, Prescott AZ, Sedona AZ, Bend Oregon. We did this and whole lot more (Disneyland, Portland, LA, Las Vegas, San Diego) in 4 weeks.

We don't need to see coastline - what we do while home in Australia plus we will be on a cruise for a week at the end. Cities are not our thing for holidays. So are happy to scoot around others and go into Atlanta just for the one night for the American Girl store stop - we don't even have to stay in Atlanta for that matter if somewhere nice is on the other side.

A few days at the start in the Great Smoky national park area is essential so we can recover from jetlag and so our eldest daughter can earn more junior ranger badges. We are happy to stay just one night in other places if it's small. Any ideas on what our itinarary should be and how long we should take between Knoxville and Arriving at Disney World?

Thanks in advance!!!!

From Knoxville head to Townsend, TN and do Cades Cove Loop Rd. in GSMNP then drive across the park by way of Newfoudland gap and go the eastern side of the GSMNP. From there go to Asheville then head to Charleston, SC then to Savannah, GA, Amelia Island, St.Augustine, Fl then to Disney World. Lots of state highways and scenic byways on this route.

How long do you have for the trip?

Thanks PB8288! Great suggestions - and the Townsend suggestion made me laugh (my maiden name). Timeframe 8-10 days.

Thanks!!

Hi,

PeachBelle has give you some great ideas... Here's a sight that you may want to check out for more detailed info about some of our scenic byways:

When in Charleston, you may want to check out the Angel Oak Tree nearby:

Or visit one of the many plantations in the area, like Middleton Place:

I love that your daughter earns Junior Ranger badges in our parks. I'm a volunteer at the visitor center of one of our national monuments, and helping kids with the Junior Ranger program is one of the best things I do there. She may want to check out Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor. It's where the first shots of the American Civil War were fired.

That website is down right now with our government shutdown.

St. Augustine offers up an interesting Spanish fort along the water (St. Augustine is America's oldest city).

And just a bit further down the coast is the Kennedy Space Center, where you can see one of the Saturn V rockets used in the Apollo moon program, as well as space shuttles and other rockets.

I hope that helps. Safe travels.

The Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah NF east of the Smokies and near Asheville have lots to offer. Craggy Gardens will be in bloom in June and Grandfather Mountain and Linville Falls are other highlights that both you and your kids would enjoy. Sliding Rock in the Pisgah NF would be great fun as well.

zed1958 - Thanks so much for all your fantastic suggestions!! Our daughter has Junior Ranger badge for Yosemite, Crater Lake and Grand Canyon. Very rate for an Australian kid to do this! I think it's a great scheme!! The government site shutdown is not helpful for planning at all! Hehe

rjr0810 - Thanks so much for those suggestions I will look into Craggy Gardens and love the sound of a place called Grandfather Mountain.
