Road trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas / 3-4 days

Hi everyone!

I'll be flying to LA on Nov. 16th from France.

I'm a musician, and I love great panoramas, quiet and unusual places. I need to be in Las Vegas on Nov. 19th, and plan to rent a car and drive through the desert.

Maybe spend 1 or 2 days in Los Angeles.

I have time, I'd love to visit ghost towns, maybe Mojave National Preserve, and Primm.

Cheap hotels / motels / lodges would be OK as long as they are safe.

If anyone has any recommendations, I would really appreciate!

Thank you and hope to hear from you very soon.

Cheers,

Sebastien

You need to plan to visit Death Valley National Park.

Stay two nights.

Make reservations. There are only a few in-park accomodations and it's a long way back if they are full.

I find Joshua Tree NP more interesting than Mojave

Merci PareoB for the tip!

But this seems quite short to go to Death Valley AND Joshua Tree, don't you think?

If not, of course this would be great.

I have no idea of the weather there at this period of the year... I hope it's gonna be nice!

Thanks again, and waiting for other advisors' thoughts!

It can be quite cold at night, especially if you are in any area with elevation, such as you can find in Death Valley.

Las Vegas temperatures: avg high 65, avg low 45

Bonjour Sebastien

Welcome to the Road Trips forum.

If you have only 3-4 days/nights, and wish to spend 2 of them checking out Los Angeles, that doesn't leave enough time in my view to get to Death Valley, if you cover the places you've already mentioned such as Primm and Mojave. Plus DVNP would be out of your way. However, you can certainly add Joshua Tree NP on your route, or even a stop in Palm Springs, depending on which way you drive and how long you're happy to spend behind the wheel.

Mid November weather should be fine, warm days, cooler nights, slight chance of rain perhaps. For more detailed and accurate weather forecasts nearer the travel dates, check out the following website:

http://www.wunderground.com/

For more details of where to stay, perhaps also ask on the California forum.

As this looks like a one way road trip, please may I suggest you check the car rental topic within the Top Qs section of the full screen version of this forum, where the foreign consolidators mentioned there won't charge you a drop fee.

Not sure what you want to do in Primm, as you are just about 40 minutes from Vegas.

If you like music, one option is to check out Pappy and Harriets in Pioneertown. Its pretty close to Joshua Tree. then you could see JTNP and head across the Mojave Preserve to Vegas.

A cool historic old bar (wood floors, tin building) outside Vegas is the Pioneer. Its off the highway in Goodsprings.

Maybe look into Nelson out near Hoover Dam. Its sort of a ghost town, and has mine tours.

If you decide to go to DVNP instead, Rhyolite ghost town is over near Beatty.

Thanks a lot for all this info, SWT and Dez!

This is very useful for me trying to organise this trip.

This Pappy & Harriets seems great! I'll get there for sure.

Whao... I can't wait to be there!

Thanks again, cheers!

Primm certainly is not a ghosttown. Outlet, rollercoaster and motels. Nothing of interest for you.

Dez already gave you the places to go. See the murals in Twentynine Palms, stop at Amboy for Roy's Cafe on R66 and stop at Kelso Depot at the Beanery and enjoy those mighty freighttrains going by. The drive through Joshua Tree and Mojave National preserve is very nice and a favorite of ours. Of course you can't beat Death Valley NP and with 2 days between LA and LV you cna add an overnight stay (take 395 to 190 and drive into DVNP.) But both Joshua tree and DVNP will be too much in your timeframe.

Hi everyone!

So, after all your tips, I had a long thought about where to go and how to organise my road trip...

Here it is, almost ready!

Please tell me what you think about it. Thanks again all for your great help!

Sat. 16th: I’m arriving quite late @ LAX, around 20.00. I hope to see LA at night, and find a cheap place to sleep close to Hollywood Blvd. What about these studios for rent? Do you think it is OK? I found things like http://www.booking.com/hotel/us/classic-hollywood-studio.fr.html?sid=3e929faa542ef83f12e6877dcf314e40;dcid=1#availability

Sun. 17th: Los Angeles to Palm Springs

Morning: Walk of fame + House of Blues + Venice Beach

Lunch: to be defined

Afternoon: rent a car (any idea? Is dollar.com OK for this from LA to LV? I saw there is no extra fee for a drop-off in Vegas), then heading to Palm Springs & Pioneertown

Dinner: Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown

Night: to be defined around Pioneertown (The Little House? Americas Best Value Inn and Suites – Yucca Valley?)

Mon. 18th: Yucca Valley / Joshua Tree park / Amboy / Barstow / Goodsprings

Morning: Mother road 66 / Roy’s Motel & Café @ Amboy / Bagdad Café

Lunch: to be defined (Barstow?)

Afternoon: Calico / Goodsprings

Dinner: Pioneersaloon in Goodsprings

Night: Gold Strike Hotel & Casino @ Jean or Primm Valley @ Primm

Tue. 19th: Primm / Nelson / Hoover Dam / Las Vegas

Morning: shopping @ Primm outlets + visit of Bonnie & Clyde’s death car @ Primm Valley

Lunch: to be defined

Afternoon: Nelson / Hoover Dam / Las Vegas (have to be there at 18.00)

Dinner: somewhere in Vegas, maybe Golden Nugget on Freemont Street…

Night: Paris on the Strip

Wed. 20th: Back to work in Vegas for LDI!

I already rent a car before and drive to Venice yourself. Can be busy on a sunday and I'm not a fan of Venice. Public transport to Venice will take 1-2 hours depending of mode of transportation. Check the LA forum for that. We find Santa Monica nicer.

Rd to Pioneer town is not long but winding and steep at places. Be careful driving in the dark. Plenty of places to stay in Yucca valley

You'll be making a detour if you drive to Joshua tree and Amboy and to Barstow after that. if you want tsomething special for the night check out Nipton motel in Nipton. Long time ago we stayed at Golden Nugget (almost 25 years) but the Fremont experience is great.

You will be backtracking going to Barstow. Calico is too Disney-like of a ghost town for me. There are places to see real ghost towns without the ice cream and souvenier shops.

There are a couple places to stay right in Pioneertown, or Yucca Valley is close.

Jean is not a place I would stay unless I had to.Pretty dumpy. Primm is a second choice but you would be backtracking to get there from Goodsprings, but just a few minutes.I've stayed at Whiskey Petes in Primm more times than I can count for off-road racing events. Its sort of dumpy too, but I get racers hotel rates so its almost free! For a little nicer head across the highway to Buffalo Bills or PrimmValley. If the conditions are right, you may be able to watch land sailing on Ivanpah DryLake between Primm and Nipton.

Sounds like you are bypassing Kelso and the Mojave preserve to head to Barstow? I wouldn't.

While at Hoover Dam, walk the bypass bridge. If you drive over the dam to the AZ side, you can look at the WWII bunker on top of the hill. No official trail up to it. That is in the works someday.
