finally may have a plan

after many questions and many changes of our minds, we think we may have a plan.

we fly to vegas october 2014 spending 7 nights there......know its a long time but this part cant be changed as we are going for a wedding.

get a rental car on the 25th October and stay one night in Grand Canyon, already booked.

travel to Jerome and spend 2 nights here, would love to be here for halloween but do need to keep moving.

travel to Phoenix and spend two nights here

travel to San Deigo and spend two nights here

travel to LA and spend 2 nights here before flying home.

1,between phoenix and san deigo seems a big day of driving, only want to about 3-4 hours driving a day, is there any where to stop over night that is worthwhile?

2,since we are so close to the mexican border should we go into mexico for a night or two? just to say we have been to mexico or is it too dangerous?

we can afford to add a few extra nights as we have not booked out tickets yet, but within reason, i do need to get back to work at some stage lol.

any advice would be great.

Not sure why you want to stay Jerome for 2 nights. Sedona only is on a 45 minutes drive and has far more lodging. You easily can visit Jerome from Sedona.

What are your plans for Phoenix? Yes, there's enough to do and see but I'm curious what your plans are there.

Phx to San Diego only is a 6 hours drive. Bite the bullet and do it in one go. Not much in between for lodging and sightseeing. Las Vegas to GC also is a 5 hours drive.

You are not allowed to bring a rental car into Mexico and those bordertowns are not very exciting imo. Has nothing to do with the real Mexico. I would not do it. Yes it can be dangerous.

You could visit Joshua Tree N.P. on the way from Phoenix to San Diego. Staying the night in Twentynine Palms, or Palm Springs.

I have to agree with Tet14 on this one. The drive from Phoenix to San Diego is straightforward and easy on the motorway/Interstate highway.

Phoenix has limited appeal to me (the only reason I go there is to see friends there), and I would take a night in Phoenix and add it to San Diego. (I'm biased because I live in the San Diego area.) There's a wide variety of things to see and do here--much more so than in Phoenix.

Also, if you're really intent on making it into Mexico, you can take the Blue Line trolley (electric light rail) from downtown San Diego to the border and walk into Tijuana for a day trip. The problem can be the wait coming back into the U.S. It can take from 1-3 hours waiting at the border crossing to get back across the border. Given the short amount of time that you have here, I would say you could spend that time better doing something else more interesting and enjoyable.

There is no point in going to a Mexican border town to say you have been to Mexico. You haven't been to Mexico.

You won't be able to take the rental car across the border.

Although the US / Mexico border drug war has calmed down some, there have been thousands killed in the last few years. A grimy border town is not a good representation of that country.

There are lots of things to do & see in Las Vegas if you're not into gambling. There are also easy drives up Mt Charleston or out to Lake Mead, Valley of Fire, Hoover Dam or Red Rocks Canyon for half day scenic excursions.

thanks for the replies. the reason for Jerome is that i have read that it is a kind of Ghost town and a lot happens there the month of october for halloween( i love halloween!!! and coming from Australia want to experience as much as i can there. the reason for phoenix .....well really it just comes into my loop when i google on maps. lol. i am looking forward to San deigo, that seems a very interesting town for us. we are not into night life, we like to do all our travelling and sight seeing during the day, well apart from 31st October, then i would love to be in maybe a small town or out in the suburbs somewhere where i cann watch the kids trick or treating. so if there is a alternate route from Jerome/Sedona to San deigo that would be great too.
