Travelling from Australia soon for 5 weeks starting December 23. Family with 3 kids 6,10,11 who are good travellers, used to long Aussie outback trips etc. I’m renting standard size SUV for the whole time. Basically 3 weeks touring and then 2 weeks skiing. I’ve been to US skiing a number of times , so comfortable with winter temps etc.
I’m ok with west coast plan. Arrive SF - 3 nights, drive coast road to LA – 2 nights, Disneyland- 3 nights, Hollywood universal-2 nights.
I plan to be in Jackson Hole WY eight(8) nights after leaving LA. I was thinking 3 nights Las Vegas with a helicopter flight to Grand Canyon and then drive up through Utah parks (Zion, Bryce, Moab) to SLC and onto JH. But now realise helicopter tours only go to less scenic west rim, so looking maybe drive Grand Canyon south rim the then east around to Zion. Or could do plane flight to south rim and back to LV. Of course the planned miles are stacking up and winter weather means I need to be flexible with itinerary.
With winter temps planning only to do scenic drive loops at parks and short lookout walks.
What do you think? I'm keen to hear ideas and opinions.
My current plan Day, Stay, Do
1, LV, morning LA, PM drive to LV
2, LV, helicopter GC, evening show
3, LV, explore

5, Hanksville, 5.5 hr drive, see Bryce, Capitol reef
6, Moab, 1.75 hr drive, see Arches, Canyons
