San Francisco to Las Vegas road trip 2015

Hi! This is our first time on here and first time planning a road trip! So all advice will be greatly received!

We are planning to go in April next year for around 10-12 days, and are looking to start in San Francisco travel to Los Angeles and finish in Las Vegas. We have been to Vegas before so already done the Grand Canyon, so not bothered about visiting it again.

If you could give us advice on a route, hotels, car rental and places to visit that would be great. We would like to travel the coast road after reading other posts on here, and we would also like to visit the wine region.

It's something we've only just started to look into, so any suggestions on what to see and do would be great.......not bothered about theme parks as such, but are open to any ideas on making a fabulous trip!

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

A basic outline for your trip, 11 nights, could be.

3 nights SF.

2 nights Yosemite NP.

2 nights Hwy 1, Monterey and Cambria (but there are other locations.)

2 nights LA.

2 nights Vegas.

Now, you could drop a Vegas night to head up to Napa before Yosemite or visit Paso Robles inland from Cambria for your wine (or stay there for that night). Not much time in LA there, but enough for a look at Hollywood and the coast.

Car rental, you will get that drop fee free through a broker like usrentacar with Alamo or Dollar.

Other option with a Vegas night, assuming you go Monterey to Paso Robles, is a night in or near Death Valley on route to Vegas.

Just to add that you should arrange car pick up for when you are ready to leave SF as a car is not required in the city and car parking can be expensive - you should also try to avoid being in Las Vegas on a Fri/Sat night as room rates on those nights can be 3 or 4 x midweek rates.

Hi

Valiant has provided you with the 'classic' route for the destinations you have named and the duration you expect your trip to be. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the route. However, you specifically mention that, unsurprisingly, you want to make it a fabulous trip. To ensure it is achieves that, then you also need to do some homework and research. Why would you go to LA, for example? It's not a place you go to (to me) just to see a 'nice' city. You need a reason. There are many, but are these what you like to see/do for a trip? Again, as you've been to Vegas, for a short trip, might you not want to also consider visiting places you've not been to before, instead? For example, rather than add Vegas (but it does possibly allow a chance to see Death Valley, and April is actually a great time for the park as it won't be as hot as mid summer, so you could actually do a few of the longer hikes without melting, you might also continue driving south beyond LA to San Diego and finish your trip there.

Just other options to encourage you to think about what you want from the trip.

The more questions you ask, especially about specifics, the more help you will get to tailor the trip to your own needs.

A few comments regarding wine areas. We've been to 3 - Sonoma, Napa and Paso Robles. We though Sonoma was the most beautiful in terms of scenery. We thought Napa was the most expensive from every point of view. Paso Robles is the most convenient with the trip outline if you don't want to add extra driving.

Also, before other beat me to it, as most of your trip is within California state, please visit the forum for that state. There are lots of topics covered in the TopQs there that will help you put your trip together, especially the drive down the Pacific coast, comparing the places to stop to visit and stay.
