USA Road trip being Delayed from SEPT/OCT14.How is June15?

HI! My boyfriend and I are from London, UK, have been wanting to travel to America for a number of years. We had also planned on going in Sept, unfortunately with my work, I can only manage end of September/Oct, Now when about to pay the deposit there is a problem with my partners job and we have to postpone our trip.

We would be starting at San Francisco then driving and stopping at these places - Monterey - Yosemite - Sequoia - Death Valley - Las Vegas - Grand Canyon - Sedona - San Diego - and flying home from LA. In total about 3.5 weeks.

How are these places in June, Is the Weather good, are they super busy and expensive etc. Sept/Oct really appealed to me mostly because we would apparently be outside of the busy time and beat the crowds.Would love to get peoples opinion on this.

ALSO, does anyone have a good hotel to recommend in Las Vegas. I am 24 and my boyfriend is 27. I am really not into the whole club party scene for when we are away, so would like the avoid the ones most highlighting this.

Thanks so much!

Welcome to the TripAdvisor forum.

We've road tripped in this region twice in June and think it's fab. And will be spending our honeymoon there again this June. Does that say it all?

Weather's good. Crowds are fine. Accommodation in California isn't expensive anyway. Get in now and you should still be able to find plenty of affordable options. Yosemite and the Grand Canyon might be a struggle (both availability and cost) but you couldn't know you'd have this sudden change to your planning. Get in soon to book both of those. And if you're stuck come back here (or to the place's own forums) and everyone will help with options.

Good time of year if you ask me!!!

There is a chance of Tioga Pass in Yosemite being closed causing a bit of grief for your ideal routing but it's not something to make you change dates.

Vegas hotel? So many options. There really aren't many where you'll find a clubby atmosphere. Certainly not in the hotel areas, anyway. Without knowing more about what you want and how much you want to spend it's hard to suggest places but here are a few of my favourites for varying budgets:

Luxor (lower budget)

MGM Grand (lower middle budget)

Mandalay Bay (middle budget)

Bellagio (upper middle budget)

Don't have a high end budget place. As far as I'm concerned Mandalay Bay and Bellagio, despite being relatively cheap, are both palaces. They would be the places I'd look first.

Good luck with your planning.

Thank you so much! you have put me at ease. I guess June it is! :)

We wanted Bellagio originally but it put the cost up by £400, though now we have longer to save we might be able to stay there. Thank you so much for your reply

You are very welcome.

Sorry, I'm going mad. I thought you were going June 2014 not June 2015. Your National Parks accommodation isn't even available yet so you'll have no problem getting it and getting it at the best rates. Just make sure you're ready to go 365 days before you're due to be there.

If you can stretch your budget for Bellagio it's worth it. If not Mandalay Bay would be great. Check out prices on British hotel websites as well as direct. And, if you sign up for an Mlife account at www.mlife.com you should be able to get a 20% tier discount at both hotels.

In your planned trip you'll miss best part of Hw1 that's between Monterey and Cambria. With 3.5 weeks you'll have enough time to add this. Extra night in Cambria before travelling to Seki and Yosemite.

I agree with Tet14 that you should, as you develop your itinerary, look to add in the wonderful Central Coast of California.

It may also be that you are better flying in to Los Angeles, heading up the coast to San Francisco, across to Yosemite and picking up you itinerary as is from there.

Advantage of flying SF is you don't need a car there and if you start LA SF will be in the middle. Also visiting Seki is harder when you start LA, drive to SF and to Seki after that.

I'm just going to add a warning/heads up that (contrary to what conventional wisdom might say) Sept/Oct is really the prime season for SF.

This is due to it being some of the best weather of the year and (typically) a fair number of large conventions. Bottom Line is that hotel rates often spike and rooms may be hard to come by. That said, to the extent you have some flexibility in your dates you may be able to avoid the real peaks from a large convention/other event. (Shifting even a few days can make a big difference when you're talking about a convention(s) that bring in 10 - 20 thousand or more attendees.)

The SF forums have a top question that links to a convention calendar. I have no idea how far out it goes, but it would certainly be worth checking before you decide on date(s).

Lastly, I agree with Tet14 that flying into SF has the advantage that you won't need a car until you leave. Otherwise, you're looking at either high fees to park your car and/or limiting your hotel options to those that offer free parking; plus you'll likely be paying for a car when you won't need it and probably won't use it.

I think you mean you'll be paying for a car you likely won't be using.

I want to make it clear I'm not suggesting starting in San Francisco and picking the car up straight away. Nor am I actually suggestion starting in Los Angeles. I'm saying there are a lot of factors that go in to deciding where to start, what route to take and where to finish - lots of factors - and the ones you talk about are not enough on their own to totally discount an option.

Hi

Lots of great ideas offered already. For June 2015, you can't book flights yet, and you may be prepared to take a risk and get the best non stop deals in the semi predictable sales around Christmas 2014. However, you will be able to book for the national park lodges from June time.

One point not mentioned about Las Vegas hotels is that they are much, much cheaper midweek. We have found stonking deals for midweek stays in some of the relatively luxurious hotels. We've stayed in LV several times and mix it up a bit, sometimes we stay in on-Strip Casino hotels - all the ones mentioned by LDN fit that description. Sometimes we stay in the non casino hotels that are set back off the Strip. You get a much more luxurious room for the same money, and a full kitchen. Most folk are happy to eat every meal out, we like the kitchen at the end of a trip to use up our left overs after having been self catering elsewhere! We're also often bored with eating so many meals out, but that's just us!

As you've now ended up with even more time to plan the trip, then use this forum for lots of homework. Read the Trip Reports section for how others paced their potentially very similar trips, use the search box to bring up old posts with advice for the destination on your list. Then perhaps put a rough itinerary together and we can then tweak that, if needed, to ensure you maximise your trip to suit you and your particular travel style and needs.
