Our last big road trip

We are planning to head out again in July. Due to some health problems this may be our last multi-week trip so are planning it carefully. It will be a round trip from Mesa Arizona to Walla Walla Washington. Here is our very tentative itinerary - please let me know if anything is wrong (distance too far, no motels at planned stops, etc) and if there are major stops we have missed.

Going north - Mesa to Kanab, UT. Spend time in Zion (we've been twice before), drive to Cedar City, UT. Take route 93 up through eastern Utah (we'd rather miss I-15 around Salt Lake City) to I-84 to Pendleton, OR and then north to Walla Walla. Still working out driving times and stops between Cedar City and Walla Walla.

We will be spending 4-5 days visiting family in Walla Walla, then taking a big arc back to go to some places we've never been before, starting with Glacier National Park - thinking of keeping to the west side and not driving Going to the Sun Highway. How many nights and where? Next - Billings, MT, see Pompey's Pillar and Little Bighorn battlefield. Overnight someplace between the battlefield and Devil's Tower, Wyoming. After Devil's Tower we are heading to Scottsbluff, NE for the night, then straight south to Walsenburg CO (avoiding Denver) and next night in Albuquerque to ride up Sandia Peak. Then if we aren't tired of travelling we will go to Socorro and the VLA before heading home via Eagar, ShowLow and Payson.

We have been to Yellowstone and the Black Hills and Colorado Springs on previous trips.

I await your thoughts and suggestions!

Hi Marian!

Why not the Going to the Sun? To me, that is the backbone of Glacier.

Hi Marian.

Do you mean US93 through Nevada towards Idaho? Ely makes a good stop, casino town with some history and near to Great Basin NP and good State Parks along it like Catherdral Gorge, but will be hot in July.

I'd not miss GTTSR, even if you just drive it on the way out then drop down towards Great Falls.

Buffalo or Gillette are ok stops off I -90 between LBH and Devils Tower. But quite possible to go Billings to Sundance or Hulett (BW near to Devils Tower) in the one day with a stop at LBH.

Going to the Sun Rd. is a must do - I agree w/denalicat's assessment.

The Idaho Panhandle (Sandpoint, Priest Lake) is sheer beauty and well worth your time.

The Wallowa Mountains (just east of Pendleton/Walla Walla are overlooked but stunning. Joseph is a pleasant town to base yourself in and the gondola ride up to the top of Mt. Howard for amazing views of Wallowa Lake and the mountains can be enjoyed by people of any age. The drive to the Hells Canyon visitor center in the region provides memorable views.

From Walla Walla ... I suggest the Highway 12 to Lewiston Idaho and continuing to your old friend, the 93, into Missoula ... I would continue on the 93 to say, Whitefish and enjoy the lower elevation lake ares of the Park...Two nights would probably be enough ... The GTTSR is again, under construction and, as it is not a personal priority, is well avoided ... Drive Marias Pass, on the 2. Continue(quickly) through Browning ... Turn on to the 89 and on to The I-90 and Billings. From Devils Tower, take the 85 South, to Lusk. 20 East, and South again,to the Agate Fossil Beds NM. Then go into camp in Scotts Bluff ...The 385 goes on & on in Eastern CO. so you might as well stay on it to Boise City,OK. and plan on a night in Santa Fe. Next day, drive down the scenic highway 14 and then, drive up to the "antenna farm" from Sandia Crest and get that 200 mile view, for a couple gallons of gas... The tram, lounge and food service are currently closed, for seasonal repairs... Enjoy the "grand tour" ! carracar

My husband is not anxious to drive Going to the Sun Highway - that may change, we did enjoy Trail Ridge Road.

I will check out Sundance and Hulett, hotel rates were high in Gillette (maybe special event on date I checked).

The gondola ride up Mt Howard sounds interesting, but we are leaning towards Grand Coulee Dam and the scablands as a side trip from Walla Walla.

Carracar, I will check out your suggestions.

Keep the suggestions coming, please!
