Well in the higher elevations you can sometimes have an early snow at the end of August or in September. It doesn't usually stick around but may cause a disruption in plans for half a day or so.

On the other hand it can be warm in the afternoons and sunny with the chance of leaves starting to turn.

I would expect below freezing temperatures at night or in the early AM, again thinking of the higher elevations of Wyoming, which is what I am most familiar with. You will need to have jackets and some warmer clothing with you.

If you happen to include Yellowstone in your plans, the bison rut is most of August with the elk rut starting in early September. Hearing bull elk bugle up their harems and seeing them crash their antlers with another bull is amazing.

We were in Yellowstone and Tetons in mid September last year and had beautiful weather but we did have a little snow one morning near Old Faithful. The temps were in the 60's and low 70's in the day time and in the 30's and 40's at night.

Still can be hot in a place like Moab but with only 2 weeks your time will be limited for the Utah detour. And yes, we had it all in Yellowstone. Nice weather and snow.

Hi

Unless you are after a quick dash around, with little time for stops and an opportunity to really enjoy some of the wonderful national parks that are located within the States you name, I think you have too much for a 2 week trip.

When in September, as that might make the decision? If it's early September, I'd head north and head towards SD and WY. Do make sure you allow enough time to see the huge variety of scenery and wildlife within Yellowstone, it's a very large park and driving is very slow because it's so popular and bison jams on the road are a normal part of most days there.

If it's the very end of the month, unless you are happy to risk very variable weather, then cover CO and UT perhaps. We got heat wave one day at the end of September in Yellostone followed by sleet the next day!

LOL, same weather forecast for June in higher elevations in Wyoming....slight chance of snow. Bring jackets.

Swap out the fall colors for wildlife babies.

Those parks (or at least parts of them, and with certain special circumstances for Yellowstone for winter) can be visited at any time of year, and are mostly open all year round. However, coming all the way from the UK, you'd want to pick a time of year when your chances of getting where you want is more likely to happen without weather complications. Thus for Yellowstone, the time to visit and be more likely to guarantee reasonable weather would be from earlyish July to around mid September. One snag is that everybody else knows that, too. So, the park would be less crowded outside those dates, but your risk of manky weather is much increased. As long as you know this, you can balance when your preferred time to visit is against the weather risks, crowds, baby animal season, fall colors or whatever.

Yes, we've also done Montana in June and got rain, fog and other things thrown at us, but also, in between, wonderful, fresh clear days with balmy evenings for sitting outside for a sundowner!

As a Brit, I'm sure you're used to the idea of experiencing all 4 seasons in one day! Just pack accordingly!
