Road trip Las Vegas - San Francisco

We are going to spend our summer holiday (road trip) in USA! 18 days (17 nights)

Leaving on 10th July to Las Vegas. Evening arrival.

We want to spend there 3 days (4 nights) (also Hoover dam and acclimate for that days)

Then this is what we want to do:

Las Vegas - Bryce (1 night in Bryce)

Bryce - Torrey (1 night Torrey)

Torrey - Arches (1 night Arches)

Arches - Page (1 night Page)

Page - Grand Canyon north rim (1 night)

Grand C - Zion (1 night Zion)

Zion - Death Valley (1 night)

Death Valley - Los Angeles (4 nights LA)

Los A - San Francisco (2 nights)

Leaving from San Francisco airport

Please let me know your suggestions/ideas. We be very thankful :-))

Sorry, this going to sound rather negative, but IMHO you've got far too much driving in there and not nearly enough time for sightseeing. It's just my opinion, but to be driving every day and then squeezing the sightseeing into the latter part of each day isn't going to be relaxing and you won't have time to do anything other than the absolute minimum in each park. Most of those parks need at least one full day to see properly, and quite a few need two or three whole days. But it's your holiday and your decision.

Also, if you haven't got accommodation booked yet then you may well run into problems. The north rim of the Grand Canyon is a particular concern as AFAIK there are no fallback options anywhere close.

If you haven't yet finalised your plans, I'd advise a rethink, doing far less mileage. But I'm very anxious not to come across as the great dictator and if it's what you want to do, go for it!

Thanks for your honest answer. I was already a bit afraid it is to much mileage.

What do you suggest?

Ah, big question! It's all about opinions and personal preferences with no right and wrong answers. One person's heaven can be the next person's hell. All I can say is do as much research as you reasonably can about each place, using the National Park Service site http://www.nps.gov and Wikipedia. This channel on YouTube has some good mainly short videos for each of the parks https://www.youtube.com/user/58NationalParks

Then experiment with routes on Google Maps, checking the mileages (although your mileages are generally ok) and trying to balance a driving day with at least one sightseeing day (IMHO). So obviously then you'll have to cut out some places but only you can make the decision as to which ones.

Hope this helps.

thanks again. What I meanly did was looking at touroperators that offer trips in the West.

And than I made our trip a bit smaller (mileage) than I thought so it is not to much mileage each day.

But I thought I ask some experts :-)

Look for example at this trip (from a USA specialist touroperator)

Dag 1 vliegreis naar San Francisco

Dag 2 San Francisco

Dag 3 San Francisco–MontereyCarmel–Modesto (ca. 400 km)

Dag 4 Modesto–Yosemite National Park–Mammoth Lakes (ca. 335 km)

Dag 5 Mammoth Lakes–Death Valley–Las Vegas (ca. 517 km)

Dag 6 Las Vegas

Dag 7 Las Vegas–Zion NP–Bryce Canyon NP (ca. 390 km.)

Dag 8 Bryce Canyon NP–Capitol Reef NP–Arches NP–Moab (ca. 400 km.)

Dag 9 Moab–Canyonlands–Mesa Verde NP–Cortez (ca. 365 km.)

Dag 10 Cortez–Monument Valley–Page/Lake Powell (ca. 400 km.)

Dag 11 Page/Lake Powell–Grand Canyon (ca. 299 km.)

Dag 12 Grand Canyon–SedonaPhoenix/Scottsdale (ca. 365 km.)

Dag 13 Phoenix/Scottsdale–Palm SpringsLos Angeles (ca. 598 km.)

Dag 14 Los Angeles

Dag 15 Los Angeles–Europa

Dag 16 aankomst Europa

less days and 1000 km more. So I thought I did oke :-)

5. Re: Road trip Las Vegas - San Francisco

Tour operators often try to cram way too much in a very short time span.

Day 3,4,5 are all way too quick.Days 7-12 are way too fast.Too much to see, not enough time.

Even the new revised tour has a lot of driving and very little time to see each park.

For the Grand Circle portion, look at the Utah Forums Top Questions. "How to see the parks of UT"

It gives sample itineraries for loops out of Vegas, with driving times, what to see etc...

Tour operators try to get as many place names as possible into their brochures. It's quantity, not quality. For example their day from Modesto to Mammoth Lakes would only give a very short time in Yosemite, a superbly beautiful and huge park which needs two or three days to explore.

Working off a list like that is an excellent way to start your planning, but IMHO you then need to adjust it by cutting out places so as to make it an enjoyable relaxing holiday where you have time to see places properly.

But as ever, it's your holiday, you time, your Guilders (err, sorry, Euros!) and your decision.

My view is that you have too many consecutive driving days at the start of the trip and you could solve this by losing some if not all of the days in LA but I might be biased as LA is not my favourite place and I would always take time in the National Parks over LA but you might not agree. If t was me I'd do something like the following:

Las Vegas - 3 nights

Las Vegas - Zion - Bryce (2 nights in Bryce)

Bryce - Torrey (1 night Torrey)

Torrey - Arches (2 night Arches)

Arches - Mesa Verde (1 night Mesa Verde)

Mesa Verde to Page via Monumental Valley (1 night Page)

Page - Grand Canyon South Rim (1 night)

Grand C - Las Vegas (1 night Las Vegas)

Las Vegas - Death Valley (1 night)

Death Valley - Yosemite (2 nights Yosemite)

Yosemite - San Francisco (2 nights)

This only works if you are happy to drop LA.

8. Re: Road trip Las Vegas - San Francisco

I have seen that tour you posted on a Dutch forum and it was burnt down to the ground there and for good reasons. With 17 days I suggest:

1. Arr Las vegas

2. Las Vegas

3. las vegas-Zion

4. Zion

5. Zion-Bryce

6. Bryce-Page (see Glen Cayon Dam here, Almost as big as Hoover. Many more places to visit in Page.)

7. To Grand canyon NP

8. Grand Canyon to Laughlin via R66

9. Laughlin to Los Angeles

10. Los Angeles

11. LA-Pismo beach/Cambria

12. Cambria-Monterey (Big sur coast)

13. Monterey-Yosemite

14. Yosemite

15. To San Francisco

16. SF

17: SF

Already will be rushed and not that much time for LA and I left out extremely hot Death Valley.

Rent the car already with European Broker. We have good experiences with www.drive-usa.com

Buy an America the Beautiful pass a the entrance of your first National Park. Will save you money.

Buy a cooler for on the road.

Make your reservations for the NP and for the coastal drive asa possible.

Veel plezier met het plannen.
