Family roadtrip: SF - Crater Lk - Cannon Beach...and back?

Planning a family roadtrip -- 2 adults and 3 kids (aged 8, 6, 3....yikes) -- for mid June. So far i have booked accommodations for our first half of the trip...

SF Bay Area -- Crater Lake, OR: 3 nights

Crater Lake, OR -- Cannon Beach, OR: 2 nights

TWO QUESTIONS:

1. For our return trip back to SF, would love some suggestions for an interesting/family fun midway point where we can stay for another few nights? Was thinking Shasta Lake area but the drive from Cannon Beach might be too much (7-8 hrs?) for 1 day w/ 3 little ones in the car. Alternate option is Crescent City area (it looks to be an hour less but that is indeed less time in the car).

2. Any recommendations on things to do for each of our destinations (Crater Lake, Cannon Beach, and mystery location).

THANKS!!

Crescent city is where much of the redwood trees are.

When are you going to be at crater? What will be open then? I don't know but usually only the lodge and the immediate are around it to the southern exit is open. The rest of the road is usually closed until around June 20... Dependants on snow fall. Being there for 3 nights is too much if the roads aren't open.

For the drive back from cannon beach you either can drive 101 back or toto I-5 and ride that back.

Cannn beach to crescent city takes 2 days at least to drive with an overnight around bandon. 2 nights in between is a better place with time to explore the different beaches.

With Cannon Beach...besides the beach, there is the town with shops and restaurants. 10 miles to the north is seaside which has more kid friendly non beach activities. Another 15 min drive is Astoria with Lewis and Clark stuff.

Along 101 in Newport is a decent kid friendly aquarium. In seaside there is a really small one.

Hi "mom" and welcome to TripAdvisor. I've lived on the Oregon coast for many years, and would suggest you drive south on Hwy 101.

Cannon Beach to Crescent City is about an 8 hour drive without stops. Ugh! too much with kids in the car!

I'd suggest a stop in Newport, then again in Gold Beach. If finances allow, consider a half day trip on the jet boats up the Rogue River from Gold Beach.

Crescent City is a pleasant town to spend a few days.

You might also think about staying in Seaside rather than Cannon Beach. Prices tend to be lower and there are more things to interest your your family - such as the fun zone, bumper cars, surreys and so on. Great beach with Promenade. You can make the short drive to Cannon Beach to visit Ecola SP.

Crater Lake - the north entrance is OPEN now :-)

However, why are you spending 3 nights there? What are you planning to do? The boat rides will not start until early July. There isn't much to do there . . .
