road trip from los angeles to breckenridge, co.

heading to colorado at the end of the month for a friend's wedding. my husband and i thought it would be a good opportunity to do a road trip since neither of us have done one through utah. we plan to do roughly 500 miles a day. wedding is on june 28th and we plan on departing on the 24th. would love any tips, places to stay (cheap!!), sites worth seeing. anything would be helpful!

From La to Breckenridge would be 2 days driving on the interstate.

driving to St George to through Zion to Bryce then up UT 12 to torrey then through Capitol Reef to I-70 is 16 hrs+ driving.

This give you 1-2 days to explore. unsure when you need to get there.

day 0 get a head start in the evening and get out of LA traffic..thus drive to Barstow or Vegas.

day 1 drive AM to Zion, PM visit Zion...night stay in Mt Carmel/Kanab

day 2 drive to Bryce canyon for the day..night in bryce

day 3 drive up UT 12 then you can drive all the way to Breckenridge if you need to ...or

option 1: drive to Maob for the night, evening in moab and the next mroning then drive to breckenridge

option 2: drive to Glenwood Springs for the night and then in the AM explore Aspen/Maroom Belles over Idependence pass then drive up to breckenridge.

Lodging will likely not be as "cheap" as you would like because of its rural area. In Kanab you can find lodging for <$100. Moab will be difficult to find cheap lodgining. You could find some cheap lodgining near glenwood springs or Rifle or Parachutte.

then on your return drive you could head south to MesaVerde, monument Valley, and South Rim of grand canyon over the same amount of time.

day 1 drive to Durango/Cortez

day 2 Mesaverde AM/early PM, evening Monument Valley

day 3 South Rim for the day

day 4 drive home

What does "cheap" lodging means to you?

When my parents do that drive, they stop in St George one night (Best Western Coral Hills) and they stop again in Grand Junction (Quality Inn Horizon Dr and La Quinta Crossroads).

Enstrom Candies (Fruita CO) is a must stop for us, Glenwood Hot Springs is another (stop to soak for an hour or so) with a stop at the Hotel Colorado for lunch.

There are of course the national parks, but usually we don't stop because we are headed to our place in Keystone for a reason, we just do minor stops as noted above.
