USA Holiday, 1 Week. 2 Cities...but where?

Not so much a road trip question but I don't know where else to post this.

As a couple, we want to go on holiday somewhere in the USA for a week in July. We did Florida last year which was nice, but would like to try somewhere different. Well, I actually would like to split my week between 2 different cities.

I am feeling overwhelmed with options. Has anyone done something similar? We're a young couple, would like to go somewhere with nice weather, with 1 of the following, beaches, tourist attractions, shopping etc.

I don't mind if we drive between them or fly between them but wouldn't want to be travelling for more than half a day or so.

I am quite open to ideas...but just not sure where to start. We have really enjoyed Florida, New York and Washington. We're driving from Vegas to San Fran next year so are looking at something other than that.

I'd really appreciate any help you can offer!

Seattle and Portland?

Shopping? Check.

Tourist attractions? Check.

Beaches? Well, not swimming ones, but pretty ones. Check.

Vancouver and Seattle. Rent a car in each for local touring (Whistler, Mt. Rainier, maybe Olympic National Park) but take the train (scenic, cheap) between them to avoid border congestion.

It will be hot but Charleston and Savannah offer history, scenery, shopping, great food, and nice beaches.

How about Sedona and the Grand Canyon National Park?

Another suggestion: Charlotte NC and Knoxville TN via the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (or any other pairs of cities each side of that park).

Nasville and new Orleans

Austin and new Orleans

Seattle and Portland would be a good option but based on your criteria it looks to far away since it will take a day in travel time to go there and come back.

Chicago and Minneapolis is another option.

Philadelphia and Baltimore

Norfolk/Virginia beach and Richmond/ outer banks.

Boston and one of the other new England cities

I'm really sorry for not ever replying to all of you for your suggestions. I was EXTREMELY grateful but just busy with work at the time.

I ended up going to San Fran and Yosemite and had an amazing time! I need to write up some reviews for TA.

I'm looking at doing another of these trips, 8 or 9 days split over 2 US cities and flying in between. I'd be going in September, if anyone has any suggestions of places that might be nice and warm (even hot?) I'd be very happy to hear them

I like the idea of these cities;

- Seattle

- LA

- San Antonio and Austin

- New Orleans + another

- Philadelphia and Baltimore (would there be enough to do for 9 days?)

- Boston and somewhere else...

I'd be looking for similar stuff to before - activities, culture, shopping, good food and a nice beach or pool. anyone have any ideas? I promise to reply quicker next time!

Next July?

Would you be interested in something like Cleveland (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, one of U.S. cultural centers) to Chicago, with visits to the Lake Erie islands, Cedar Point, Michigan's Gold Coast or Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore region? Or is this too close to home or areas that you've visited in the past?

There's much information nested in this link on these destinations.
