Help plan a family Trip to California with 2 kids (12 and 9)

Hi there,

We are planning a holiday in July 2014. We need to work on itinerary - California 3 weeks. We are planning a road trip. Is it safe with kids. we have a Singapore driving license. Will that work. Would appreciate if you can give us some pointers on how to get started with our itinerary which the kids would enjoy. This has to kids-centric vacation . Something that can cover Yosemite, San Francisco..Pier 39, Golden Gate,Napa Valley,San Diego( San Diego Zoo, Sea world), Las Vegas too.Your recommendations would be really appreciated. Please help as this would be our first one to west coast.

Thanks in advance,

Jane

Think you're rather late planning this for next month. Where are you flying into? How old are the kids? re you renting a car after landing? Are you flying back from the arrival point? . Is your driving licence in English? Etc.

A natural loop would be Los Angeles > San Diego > Las Vegas > Death Valley > Owens Valley (Lone Pine, Bishop or Mammoth Lakes) > Yosemite > Napa Valley > San Francisco > Monterey area > Cambria/Morro Bay/San Luis Obispo area > Los Angeles.

Three weeks is fine for that loop unless you want to spend a lot of time in the LA theme parks, etc. You could probably extend it to include the Grand Canyon, ideally with an overnight stop at the South Rim in the national park.

You could start at any of the big cities on the route. Doing the route counter-clockwise would have the advantage of having the scenic pullouts on the coast road on your side to avoid having to cross traffic coming in the other direction.

Accommodation in the parks and in the centres of cities will probably be a problem if you haven't pre-booked, so you might have to make some compromises in that respect.

If you haven't already done so, have a look on Google Maps and start thinking about your daily driving distances.

Kid centric wouldn't include Las Vegas, in my opinion. But it could.

California state forum page: tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g28926-i29-Califor…

Basic 3 week loop: tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i38853 I'd modify it to include San Diego instead of Las Vegas & the South Rim of GCNP ~ too much driving and not enough fun for kids. SFO - SF - Yosemite - Lone Pine (peek into Death Valley) - L.A. - San Diego - Anaheim (southern CA destinations in a variety of orders okay) - Pismo Beach - Monterey - SFO

You are VERY late to try to get lodging reservations. This is going to be a huge project. Look at the Top Questions on each destination page, especially Yosemite & San Francisco.

Maybe the OP still has to buy the tickets....In that case try San Francisco. You can pick u the car after the SF visit because you don't need a car there.

I agree with taking Las Vegas out of the plan. Anyone under 21 is not allowed in so many places. If you really want to see it, keep it short.

Napa Valley is also probably not going to be great for the same reasons - winery tours are not very kid friendly and the kids can't go into the tastings.

Beaches, theme parks and natural beauty in national parks. Stick with those things and you'll have a great trip.
