October Road Trip from Seattle->Los Angeles

My husband and I are going on a road trip mid/late October. We are flying into Seattle and back out of LA. Our goal is to spend time in a few different cities, ultimately to make a decision about moving at a later date. Some places we have been to before, and some places are unfamiliar.

(Basic plan: Seattle 2-3 days, Portland 1-2 days, Eugene 1-2 days, Redwoods 2 days, SF 2-4 days, Big Sur 2 days, LA remainder of time) (We have our flights bought and specifically want to spend longer time in certain cities for set reasons.)

I have a few questions::

Pertaining to Travel=

We had thought about renting a car in Seattle, and finding campsites down to Los Angeles. If I'm going to spend over $1k in car rental, I started looking at other options for different portions of the trip - AmTrak, JetBlue, etc.

How is camping in the Pacific Northwest during that time of year? Is that not a logical thought?

Any alternate transportation you have experienced and enjoyed?

Pertaining to Lodging=

Again, any camping (specifically Eugene, Redwoods, and Big Sur area) suggestions? Hostels? Creative places in the larger cities?

Suggestions on spending and sightseeing=

We are not very touristy (coming from Nashville) and like to see places off the beaten path. IE I don't want to get caught in Big Sur village - remote is better. Suggestions on cool spots you have stumbled on? Hot springs?

We have 16 days including two days of travel - We are in our late 20s-mid 30s - both work in music and live event production - Newly married and seeking an adventure!

While $1,000 may seem like a lot for car rental, Trains or flights will be $100+ per person and would quickly add up to about that amount... there are some places on your list (Big Sur and most redwood groves) that are difficult to reach by any form of public transit, so even if you mostly do public transit, you will need a rental in some places, especially camp grounds...

The train is defiantly an option from Seattle to Portland. It would work to Eugene, and could work for Eugene to SF... Here on this coast if looking for flights look at Southwest, Virgin America and Alaska... United used to own this market.

Since you specifically mention Redwoods, the coastal redwoods are found from roughly the CA/Oregon border to a bit south of Big Sur. Most people think of Muir woods (just north of SF, and reachable by public transit or Redwood National park and associated state parks near Eureka... but there are wonderful redwood groves south of San Francisco, particularly Big Basin or Henry Cowell State parks...

Camping is an option in the redwoods or at Big Sur, or along the coast heading for LA... it isn't going to work in the cities... In mid to late Oct it is likely to be cold Washington... possibly wet in Oregon and California. From SF south it is an option... They are predicting an El Nino year... if so, it will be dryer in CA in Oct than normal...

Think you can do better than $ 1000,-- for a rental car unless you want to drive a full size SUV but smaller cars prob will be cheaper. We don't camp but in october you can find cheap Mom and Pops places along the coast although that will be a bit hard between Monterey and Cambria. Have you already been to Yosemite NP? Won't make that much of a detour and after driving the coast for so many miles it will make a nice diversion.

$1000 is high....

As for the weather....mid/late October starts to turn to the rainy season where you will see rain at least 2 out of 3 days....with the chance of strong storms.

From mid October through January is the NW hurricane season when former hurricanes off of Japan go into the gulf of alaka and crates a very strong storm with high winds and Ryan's,

If you want to camp move this to mid september

Re: Camping in California, check the California State Park website and get all those state parks that offer camp sites. You typically find them away from big cities. Try to book the sites early.

Big Sur: Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park

Near Ventura: Emma Wood State Beach - camping on the beach

Point Mugu: Point Mugu State Park - also camping on the beach
