US East Coast 14 days trip

Hi all,

me and my girlfriend are flying to New York in the beginning of August. We are coming from Zagreb, Croatia, and are staying 14 days.

Besides staying a few days in New York and Washington, we plan to rent a car and make a road trip on the east coast. Since we have no experience with US traffic, we need some help in planing a road trip, especially with determining the right size of the trip.

We have computer science background, so besides regular sights, we would really all the geeky stuff we might find on the trip :)

We would like to see the following (in the order of preference)

- New York

- Washington DC

- Atlantic City

- Boston

- Great Smoky Mountains

- Shenandoah National Park

- Niagara Falls

We would also like to squeeze in all other interesting places, both historic and scenic.

- Would driving to Florida be too optimistic for a limited time we have?

- What other locations/sights/experiences would you recommend for our trip?

- How many days would you consider enough for exploring New York and Washington?

Best regards,

You dont have enough time and will have to choose.

If you are traveling for 14 days....I figure:

4 days in NYC then take the train to DC for 3 days.

This leaves 7 days for driving.

You could do a loop trip around DC where you could drive to the beach for 3 days then drive to Shenandoah/Blue Ridge Parkway for 3 days then drive back to DC to fly home

another option is to drive up to Niagara Falls where you do Shenandoah and blue ridge for 2 days, 1 day drive to NF, NF for the day, Finger lakes for the day, day drive down to DC/baltimore---could visit Amish country, day in baltimore inner harbor.

Thanks Dan!

That's really helpful. And I really like the idea with Amish country, that didn't cross my mind before!

I don't know if it's exactly geeky, but check out the Udvar-Hazy Center of the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum near Dulles Airport outside of Washington, DC.

One option would be to start in NYC, then take Amtrak train or a bus (Megabus, Bolt or Greyhound) to Boston, where you could visit MIT and the MIT Museum, geek central on the East Coast.

Then you could go to Niagara Falls before heading to Washington, DC. Drop your rental car in Washington and then take a train or bus back to NYC if you're flying out of there.

This thread could help with the Washington, DC, area.

If you're going to Niagara Falls, Ohio Amish Country southeast of NF is the largest in the world and eastern Holmes County is more pervasively Amish than Lancaster County in PA. See discussion here:

One hour west of Cleveland is Cedar Point, the roller coaster capital of the world. See the discussion in the above travel article. Also check out Presque Isle in the travel article, if you would like to experience fresh water surf swimming. It's located half way between Niagara Falls and Cleveland, which is four hours southwest of NF.

The Cleveland Museum of Art is one of the nation's best and is the most technologically advanced art museum (a very geeky :-) art museum) in the U.S., e.g., with an acclaimed ArtLens iPad app and with the nation's largest multi-touch screen. Read about it and other Cleveland attractions here:

Cleveland's Case Western Reserve University is a leader in virtual reality development:

Cleveland also is a center of Croatian immigration in the U.S.

You might enjoy visiting the American-Croatian Lodge in Eastlake, where many Croat weddings take place in Cleveland:

The Cleveland Cultural Gardens uniquely facilitate and celebrate the great American "Melting Pot."

As you can see, you have months worth of options, so you'll have to make some tough decisions.

The Southeast particularly will be hot and humid in August and you'll face the risk of tropical storms and hurricanes.

Good planning!
