Flights actually booked - Dallas round trip!

Hi all,

Well, we have finally booked some flights for our honeymoon road trip next year! Our ideas have changed so much, but we finally settled on a round trip from Dallas, due to cost of flights, avoiding a drop off fee, trying to make a more manageable and flexible trip, and doing plenty of research on here.

We have booked return flights to Dallas for 18 nights from the end of March / first 2 weeks of April. So here’s where the real planning starts!

We definitely want to spend time in Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Houston (about 2 nights each – won’t pre-book these so we are flexible) and New Orleans (3 nights). We don’t mind if we start our trip through these cities or work our way back to Dallas through them.

So if you could help, I’m after some ideas for routes either east or west from here and then back to Dallas, incorporating the above cities. I am tempted by Nashville, but know nothing about the area east of San Antonio, so we’re open to any weird and wonderful ideas!

Thanks :)

A current thread is open on this subject. See tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g1-i12567-k7615190…

That's a winter trip, though. As your trip is in springtime I would include the Hill Country west of Austin/north of San Antonio. The reason being that wild flowers will be blooming so it's a pretty time of year there. Drive around, visit some wineries and spend a night in Fredericksburg.

You don't mention scenery or the outdoors but I would be remiss not to mention Big Bend National Park which is a completely different part of Texas. It's the better part of a day's drive from San Antonio, but well worth it depending upon your interest and interesting scenery on the way.

You have about an extra week.

based on your plan its either Austin-SA-HOU-NO or reverse it

As part of this trip you could include Memphis and/or Nashville

From New Orleans it would be 1 day drive to Nashville, 2 days Nashville, 2 days Memphis, 1 day drive to Dallas

Also at this time is a good time to visit Big Bend National PArk , the Hill country, and going south toward Brownsville and South Padre

If you do Big Bend you could also drive over to El Paso and see the parks near there (White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns, Guadeluppe)

If you decide to include Big Bend National Park, you will have to book in advance for that one. There is only one place to stay inside the park--Chisos Mountain Lodge--and they begin accepting reservations a year in advance. Your timetable puts you there at one of the peak times of the year, so check right now if you want to include that. There are some other places to stay in the tiny towns outside the park, but you spend a lot of time driving back and forth if you stay outside BBNP.

Once you do set your itinerary, you might check San Antonio for lodgings on your nights there. It's also a very popular place at that time of year--in addition to regular visitors there are often large convention type groups in town so accommodations can be trickier and more expensive to find if you wait.

Also, places in the Texas Hill Country like Fredericksburg are small, with more limited lodging choices. Wouldn't hurt to have a look there in advance as well.

Thanks for all your comments, I'll take a good look at the other thread too. Was beginning to think we may head towards Nashville first and then through NOLA to houston, san antonio etc. Hadn't really thoughy about anywhere West of there so lots more to look at. Liked the thought of the Carlsbad caves when we were originally looking at coming from vegas so plenty more to look at now, thanks :-)
