I'm planning a cross country RV tour Route 66 style

We'll be driving from Evansville, IN to Santa Monica and back. I would appreciate some tips and hints for not only getting the most bang for our buck but also for seeing the most that we possibly can!! We are a 30-something couple, no kids wanting a true American Adventure!

When are you planning to travel? Is it your RV or are you planning to rent one? Are you on a mobile platform or can you see the Top Questions on the right side of this page with the link to *Should I rent an RV*? How long do you have for your trip?

BTW, welcome to the Road Trips forum!

Good questions above, please give us more information!

*When* is your trip and *how long* you have are very important.

Also, if your own rig, is it motorhome, MH with tow, or truck & trailer?

You'll find many resources available for planning and executing your trip. A couple you should have are EZ66 Guide (essential) and Route 66 Adventure Handbook (very useful). Driving an RV to the beginning of Rt. 66 in Chicago doesn't sound very exciting, so maybe start in Springfield IL. Two weeks for the trip West would allow time for a detour to Grand Canyon NP South Rim.

A couple of websites which look good for RVing the route are:

Almost 2000 miles already to SM with the GC detour so yes, it helps if you tell us how long you have and time of year.

See the top question in the right corner about route 66.

In this widely linked trip report, see especially the additional trip report linked in post 69, which actually emphasizes seeing non-Route 66 attractions along the route.

Ha! Sorry, everyone, my email alerts weren't set up, so I didn't realize everyone was answering! Anyway, I am planning on late spring/early summer driving from Evansville, IN, possibly renting an RV, but the more I look into it, the less viable it seems, so possibly driving our own SUV, and we have a 13 day time frame.

13 days one way works for Rt. 66 starting in St. Louis. For a RT from Evansville it doesn't work. How many days in total do you have?

Oher than basic campervans (which are really only 'glorified tents', lol) , a motorhome will mean slower travel than a standard passenger vehicle.

If you have only 13 days total, I agree that you don't have time for a round trip, no matter what you're driving. Well, unless that's all you want to do... drive.
