California - Grand Canyon itinerary

I posted this in the CA forum with limited feedback so it looks like this may be the more appropriate forum.

Here is our tentative itinerary for July 2015

Day 1 - Fly to Las Vegas - drive to Grand Canyon (South Rim)

Day 2 - Grand Canyon

Day 3 - drive toward Death Valley (overnight Pahrump, DV, other?)

Day 4 - Drive to Lee Vining with stops (Schulman grove, Mono Lake, etc)

Day 5 - Yosemite - Tolumne and surrounding areas (end day in Valley lodging)

Day 6 - Yosemite valley highlights

Day 7 - Drive to Sequoia / Kings Canyon

Day 8 - SEKI

Day 9 - drive to Henry Cowell State Park - overnight in Monterey area

Day 10 - Monterey Bay Aquarium

Day 11 - drive to Pismo Beach via US1 with stops

Day 12 - drive to Long Beach - Aquarium of the Pacific - drive to Dana Point

Day 13 - whale watching - drive to San Diego

Day 14 - San Diego Safari Park

Day 15 - San Diego Zoo

Day 16 - fly home

I realize it is a little more on the go than many people prefer, but it allows us to see all of the things that interest us most.

So, any thoughts, comments, or suggestions?

Thank you

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Have you thought about flying into Phoenix, so you don't have to backtrack?

Overall it looks ok to me, depends on your tastes if you want to see bothYosemite and SEKI, Sequoias in Yosemite at Mariposa Grove. However, I do like the drive down Kings Canyon alongside the river.

Thank you for your esponse.

I would prefer Phoenix but it appears that one-way car rentals from Vegas to SD are much cheaper than Phoenix to SD.

We plan on skipping Mariposa Grove since we will be heading to SEKI after Yosemite.

I guessed that might be the issue : (.

We get those routes drop fee free as foreigners, but not so US citizens.

Not sure why you want to go to 2 aquariums. You can drive between south rim and Death Valley (Furnace Creek) in app 7 hours for a much nicer stay than Pahrump. And of course San Diego also has Seaworld. And whalewatching also can be done from Monterey.

To avoid confusion, know that you will be on California Highway 1, not U.S. 1, which is on the East Coast.

I would not skip the Mariposa Grove especially since you should exit out the South Entrance on Highway 41 to head to SEKI.

For whale watching I'd go out of Newport Beach over Dana Point, either Davy's Locker or Newport Landing and the Aquarium of the Pacific has whale watching as well.
