Cheap Family Vacation Suggestions

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone has any personal suggestions for a cheap family vacation. We live in NY State. My husband will be layed off a mandatory 10 weeks this year and while things will be a little tight, I was hoping to use some of the time either traveling or vacationing. We can pick the time as we please. Although we have two daughters 5 and 7 so it would be easier to schedule around school. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Jessica

I would recommend a cruise if you all have passports...the benefit is that you can visit many different port cities for one price, and there are plenty of activities onboard to keep everyone happy. You get to pick your price point, depending on the room choice, and port excursions, you can set a budget easily. Just know that what is included, is meals, room, and entertainment. What isn't included is gratuities, alcoholic beverages and sodas, port excursions booked thru the cruiseline, and souvenirs.

As a second choice, why not pick someplace close to home that your family hasn't explored yet. We like to take our kids on history mystery tours. We pick the place, and make a game out of it, with clues along the drive so they don't get bored. They guess where we might be going, and why the place we are visiting is important. Then they already have some background information when we arrive.

Consider renting a beach house in the USA. VRBO (vacation rental by owner) as well as cyberrentals list places all over the US and world. You can save money by cooking some of your meals in the condo or home. We've always had good luck with this.

What did you have in mind? An affordable rental where you could spend a month or so? Or some kind of tour, where you could see different sites? Were you planning on driving or flying somewhere? There are lots of "camping resorts" in New England, where you can rent a cabin and the kids can participate in organized activities. Or you could set up a series of rentals ... two weeks in one state, two weeks in another? With that amount of time, there are also opportunities to be a caretaker for someone's rental property or the "park resident," in some of the national parks, both of which often come with free housing. Write back and let us know more detail, ok?

How about Virginia beach, Williamsburg or Gettysburg for a little history lesson? We've vacationed in at www.MyrtleBeachTravelPark.com in years past. About 8 years ago it was only about $500 for an entire week to stay in one of their on-site travel trailers. They also have cabanas for rent but they sell out quickly. They have a lazy river, 2 pools (one indoors and one out) and during the summer, activities for the kids in the pavillion. Check out their website above. Good luck...

Hello--Just a reply to those who replied re VRBO. We've had some great luck with them and found MUCH more reasonable pricing, too. I do however, pay close attn. to the guest list if you're a bit picky (like us). We just stayed in a place that didn't have one and it did wind up being a bit dirtier than we'd have liked (not bad but not great). Also, you get a WHOLE lot more room which for us is a necessity on any vacation!

Good luck!

I think the idea of a few weeks camping is a great one! You are fortunate to live in an area that is convenient to so many historic states. In PA check out:www.knoebels.com. this is great family amusement park, with cabin rentals only about $110. Spend a few days, perhaps check out Hershey, but if money is tight perhaps avoid that this trip.

Regarding the beach rentals, unfortunately, in the northeast, the season is so short that many rentals are not inexpensive at all. You will find better rates in June than July or Aug. Close to Stone Harbor and Avalon at the New Jersey shore is www.bigtimberlake.com which has cabin camping for under 100 a night just a short drive from some great family beaches. The campground also offers lots of activities.

You could continue a road trip into DC, or head to Virginia to see Chincoteague Island with the wild ponies. Your daughters would probably love that, and I am sure there are cabin rentals or tent campgrounds nearby!

Have fun, make it an adventure, and the girls will never know it was budget related!
