Family beach holiday (2 adults, a 2.5yo and a 15mth old)

Looking for suggestions for somewhere to go for a beach holiday in May. Within 10-11 hours flight time of the UK (we're seasoned long-haulers), something slightly off the beaten track (we've been considering Cape Verde and Gambia) and has a good selection of things to see and do both on and off resort (water sports, spas, bars, cafes, local attractions etc). Would like to stay clear of big super-resorts if possible.

Any and all suggestions to this impossible question welcome.

Cheers

We love Cuba for a number of reasons but first and foremost, it's safe and clean.

An easy way to enjoy the best of both worlds - being beautiful beaches + culture is to stay in a beach resort near Havana (Varadero, Jibacoa or Playa del Este, for example) and do day trips or divide your trip between a few days in Havana and a few days at a beach resort.

Shopping's not really a draw unless it's cigars and rum you're after, but the culture, countryside, weather and people are warm and inviting, and unlike any other Caribbean country we've been to.

Ps - your children will be so embraced by the Cuban people. The first time we went our daughter was 11mos and she was treated like a rock star!

Thanks for the tips/info, we'll definitely look into Cuba as a trip this year. Can you recommend a resort?

Maldives! Before it too late and they are under water and overcrowded. Its really really amazing. Youd have to find a kids friendly resort though as many are very much for honeymooners and very very quiet. Just beach and pool. thats its but amazingly beautiful.

I have two sons I've taken to Cuba twice - I'd recommend the Tryp Peninsula or Sol Palmeras in Cuba. The Tryp, because the kids area - pool, playground, kid's club, are all located together at the resort, away from other things, and if you ask they will give you a room right in that area.

We just came back from Sol Palmeras also in Veradero Cuba, the kid's areas are fine, not as great as the tryp, BUT they have bungalows - one, two or three bedrooms. This way if your kids go to bed at 8 you don't have to sit in the dark and do nothing. You'll have your bedroom and living room and your little porch to hang out on.

What most people say they don't love about Cuba is the food. Most don't find it bad, just kind of bland. Which is pretty much the way your toddlers prefer it, I'm sure.

Some tours in cuba that kids would enjoy - the Guama Sugar and Steam one involves trains, alligators, and fast boats. Perfect for little kids.
