Need ideas for east coast family beach vacation

We need suggestions for a family beach vacation. We have a 3 1/2 year old daughter and are looking for a great place to spend some together. We want to stay away from places that are overly commercialized like Daytona or Myrtle Beach. We really like St. Augustine which we feel has a good balance of things to do besides the pool and the beach but yet is not overly commercialized.

We would like to go some where on the east coast but north of Florida as we are concerned about the oil spill and it travelling up the gulf stream.

Any suggestions will be appreciated!

If you go to the different forums of St pete Beach, Fl - Clearwater, FL, Marco island, FL, Sarasota FL, they are saying now that the spill will not affect their beaches.

The gulf coast is really pretty, with prettier water and beaches than the east coast of Florida, imho

It's not the east coast but maybe consider a stay at the Tx coast in the old fashioned, not commercialized beach town of Port Aransas. Corpus Christi a/p is a 30 minutes drive. 3 hours from San Antonio. It lacks the turquoise waters and snow white beaches but we thoroughly liked our stays.

Well here's an east coast idea that is NORTH of FL....lol and that is Cape Cod. The Cape is completely unique in our country. We have low wave action on our Nantucket Sound beaches, big waves on our Atlantic side where Kennedy formed the protected National Seashore area back in the 60s. Then there are the Cape Cod Bay beaches where the water goes out about a mile at low tide and your little one can poke around and see the little crabs and fish is the tidal pools that remain. Many kids like the pond beaches, with nice and warm water. And all these waters have different surroundings. The Cape is full of interesting natural and man made attractions, entertainment, accommodations and restaurants. Summer (July and Aug) is very warm and the Cape is famous for being family friendly.... that's what all those ice cream shops are all about. Let me know if I can give you a lead on where you can get more info.

Have you looked into the Outer Banks of North Carolina? There are many beaches to choose from in this area. You can choose to stay in a hotel or rent a condominuim or house. There's also plenty of other things to do, such as: the NC Aquarium, the Wright Brothers Memorial, Jockey's Ridge, the Lost Colony, many lighthouses. The list goes on.
