Carribean vacation ideas with 14 yr. old.

We are trying to plan a vacation in the Carribean with our 14 year old daughter and are completely overwhelmed. Any recommendations, islands OR hotels? (no AI)

St John in the US Virgins. Accessable only by ferry from St Thomas, St John is the smallest of the USVI's and has a series of packet beaches along the northshore that offer some excellent snorkeling right from the beach. It is in the heart of yachtie country, so it's easy to take day trips to Jost Van Dyke, Tortola, and Virgin Gorda. (Bring your passports) Much of the island is a national park and most of the rooms available are in private villa rentals of various sizes, which is how I stay there. It is mountainous and there are some drop dead views of the BVI's and St Thomas from various spots on the island. There are 2 resorts, The Westin St John - and if it's in the budget stay in a 2 bedroom condo for the best views, and Caneel Bay on it's own private penninsula with 7 lovely beachs - and very pricey.

Gallows Point, walking distance to Cruz Bay and the ferry landing, is very popular for a small condo resort and has a real convenient location. Lindholm Estate is at the opposit end of town and also has a great view.

Checkout www.usvi.net to start.

Another island I love is Anguilla at the far end of the BVI's across from St Martin (20 minute ferry ride). Connecting flights to Anguilla from San Juan and St Thomas. A rather flat, scrubby island with long (miles long!) beaches and some outstanding water for swimming and snorkeling. The more cost effective places are hard to find these days as Anguilla has become something of a haven for the super-rich, but they're still there. More 'dressy' than beachbimmish St John, and very upscale restaurants. Like St John, the locals are really nice folks.

Last, but by no means least, Provo in the Turks and Caicos Island located in the same region as the Bahamas, but a separate entity. Provodencials is the island of choice for most visitors. I've been looking at it for a vacation for some time now. Their local expert, Potcake, can offer all the info you'll need. Like Anguilla, low and scrubby with great beaches and snorkeling that is probably some of the best around.

A 14 yo might be a bit pored if they don't like beaches, snorkeling, boating, etc. These islands are not big on clubs and stuff. Everyone is pretty much asleep early. As one person said, when it comes to nightlife on St John, bring a good book! A little more on Provo, but not Aruba or one of the other more developed islands. All are safe and more or less upscale.
