Advice for 10-hour flight with 21-month-old

We will be flying from Sydney to Hawaii with our 21-month-old (flight is overnight), and then returning 10-days later (flight is during the day).

Does anyone have any tips for surviving this? This will be the longest flight we've taken her on - we've never even had to change a nappy during a flight before!

As your first flight is at night I would suggest sticking to her night time routine as much as possible. Put her in PJ's and take her favourite snuggle toy. If you read a story before bed, bottle anything else follow the routine.

Just before you board the flight make use of the extra space and change her nappy in the Ladies/Family Room. Once on-board take note of which toilet has the change table.

Before your flight explain what is going to happen eg Mummy, Daddy and her are going on a long flight that will last all night. She will go to sleep on your lap and you will all be there in the morning together.

Same goes for the hotel stay.

The return flight will provide more of a struggle. How to keep a toddler contained for 10 hours. Take toys, a small magnadoodle, practice wearing head phones and she may watch the kids shows or take a portable DVD player or Tablet loaded with favourite shows.

Good luck

Patience will be required

Just make sure she isn't congested. If she can't clear her ears, then it will feel like knitting needles being shoved through her head. That will, easily, make her inconsolable.

If you're lucky she will cry horribly before take-off, clearing your row of others. Then she'll fall asleep as soon as the plane leaves the ground. My son did that once - it was one of my best flights.
