Miami perhaps. New York City is a possibility. Are you looking for one destination only? Washington DC is a good choice, but there are no beaches in the immediate area.

Are you looking to go east or west coast--I can't tell where you are from? If east coast and you don't want to drive, then you are limited to the major cities. NYC is an obvious choice, but there aren't any beach front hotels--you can take the subway to a place like Coney Island for the day. Washington DC is also an easy place to get around without a car, but again no beach. Boston and Philadelphia are also good for walking and public transportation.

I think the west coast is a bit harder for cities with public transportation. But San Francisco is great. So is San Diego. Also you can look into Las Vegas.

I think the OP is from the U.K...........................the city of Chicago, Illinois has everything you're looking for Including Beaches ................. I'd recommend the Oak Street Beach, on the shore of Lake Michigan, in downtown Chicago, within easy access/walking distance to many shops, hotels and restaurants....in fact there are even cafes/restaurants beachside....Chicago has marvelous architecture including many Frank Lloyd Wright buildings, great river cruises, zoo, incredible people watching at the many downtown parks, along with street entertainment, outdoor sculpture and art installations, aquariums, museums, world class sports, incredible dining options and fabulous shopping....the HOHO buses are a fun way to see the city and it fits your criteria exactly....

Chicago is a great city but maybe 2 weeks there will be too long. Miami has beaches galore but it will be hot and very humid that time of year and chances on hurricanes. Maybe consider southern Califonia. Los Angeles and San Diego and maybe even San Francisco. There are trains running between those cities.

Amtrak between LA and SD is a great ride. It goes right along the shore at places and has many places where it will stop. Train between LA and SF also goes along the shore but not at the most scenic stretches of the coast. Santa Barbara also will be great for a visit. Your son surely will like Venice aka muscle beach but don't stay there overnight.
