Is there a good place to buy fresh mussels in Havelock ?
Preferably reasonably priced and fresh.
I always buy them fresh from mussel pot restaurant to take away. cheap as. if you in havelock my best recommendation is the mussell platter to share. you will be able to have steamed, smoked, marinated, battered, half shell grilled, chowder and it is great.
Havelock is the mussel capital of the southern hemisphere, possibly the world. If you don't like the look of popynz's suggestion you might have to walk 5 or 6 meters to find somewhere else.
We got a coffee and chips with a nice clean taste from the Mussel Pot. Walked down to the water and contemplated the meaning of it all. It doesn't get much better than that.
Thanks all for the replies.
Yes, have been to Mussel Pot, but just thought it would be a lot more economical if we bought our own fresh live mussels and cook it ourselves.
Hence my question on the availability of live fresh mussels in Havelock....
The supermarket has a large'aquarium' with fresh mussels available, just grab a bag and fill to your heart's content.
At $5 a kg fresh takewawy at the mussel pot I assure you dont really need to stress too much about it. You can get a whole meal for two people for that. I liked the mussel pot as they put them in ice for me - and I knew they were fresh in. But the supermarket has them, and sometimes down on the harbour. But for $5 a kg at mussel pot to buy fresh takeaway works for us!Edited: 04 March 2016, 01:35
The Hairy Mussel in Inglis St. They supply the supermarkets and are therefore fresh. Just go through the door marked "authorised personnel only", go up the stairs and the ladies will sell direct to you.
This thread has been dead since March. Why did you dig it up?
No worries, will pen this down for my next trip to Havelock :)
