Korcula Simply the best

My Wife and I have travel a fair bit, looking for a nice place to stay, good food, nice wine, some scenery and some sense of the people and the place we visit. It’s a hit and miss affair and while I use trip advisor to help me I’ve never posted a review before. We’re private folk.

However this September we traveled along the coast of Croatia taking in the Island of Korcula and came across everything we look for in a holiday in a remote spot on the Island. I had asked directions off a lady who was very helpful and then wondered if there was somewhere nice to stay locally as the scenery was breathtaking. It happened she had an apartment which left me feeling very wary in case it wasn’t that nice. I needn’t have worried as she brought me to her house on the sea and showed me her three apartments all with separate entrances and all with large terraces overlooking the sea. They were very new and very well fitted out (Air conditioning and screens on windows were all I needed to see). We agreed to stay one night in case things weren’t as good as they seemed but ended up staying for 3 and wished we had found it earlier on our trip.

What made it so good was that we felt we had this part of the island to ourselves, yet at 8 that evening we could smell the burning wood and fish being cooked. Vinko ( the owner) had come home from work and went off with his daughter to catch the fish. He cooked it for us on the fire using his own olive oil with fresh rosemary and seasoning to make it the nicest fish I’d ever eaten. It was served with his own red wine which was much nicer than the wine I’d been getting previously in Croatia. He also served it with a lemon he had grown himself. Then they did the nicest thing of all…. Left us alone on the terrace to enjoy it. I couldn’t help thinking of the fish I’d had in a top restaurant in Dubrovnik which wasn’t a patch on this.

The next morning Vinko took me fishing with him for 2 hours showing me all the local islands and coastline. Needless to say we caught nothing but it was so beautiful. My wife and I could come and go as we please, read on the terrace, go for a swim, drink their red wine ( he also makes white) and just relax. We had two fantastic meals there, simple but so tasty. I could only appreciate the quality of their lifestyle and their accommodation. They had the gift of a great location and the sense to do things right. They take such pride in everything that we could only appreciate it gratefully. When it came to pay I couldn’t believe the small amount they charged.

So for anyone looking for a lovely relaxing place away from it all, I can fully recommend this spot called Karbuni near Blato on Korcula. The simplicity and quality of our experience was so enjoyable that I felt obliged to acknowledge it by letting other people know who would appreciate this kind of experience. The email address for them is ana.donjerkovic@du.htnet.hr

I’m back home in Ireland now and fondly remembering those 3 days as the highlight of our 10 days in Croatia. The whole country is beautiful, the towns and cities incredible, yet our experience with the Donjerkovic family surpassed them and most of our other travels as well. Never have I seen simplicity done so well and with the judgment to leave us the space to savour it for ourselves.

I can still taste the fish……….

Thanks you for this interesting reviews. We are very interested in these apartments. Do you know if they have a website? Can you give us a little more detail on the accomadation ( we are 2 adults and 2 kids) including prices , location , proximity to other places to eat, things to do etc. At this point we have 2 weeks in Croatia and we are thinking we may have 2-4 days in Dubrovnik and 6 nights on either Korcula or Hvar ... or both. Do you have any comments on this plan? Many thanks

Hi Inmar

The apartments don't have a website, but there are 3 apartments two have two bedrooms and one has three. each have own entrance and terrace. They are not near anything I'm afraid. The nearest town is Blato about 7 miles away, and Vela Luka about 15 miles. The things to do are swimming, walking, fishing and unwinding on the terrace. The family mentioned diving as well. I don't know how that will go down with your children. It really was just a lovely place to relax and enjoy rather than a place full of activities.

As regards your trip, we spent 3 days in Dubrovnik at the Benussi apartments which again were excellent in terms of location, facilities and terrace. 3 days was enough for us there and we drove on down the peljesac peninsula which was lovely. The nicest place we found was a small port town called Trstenik which had some apartments, restaurants and swimming. Island of Korcula is beautiful, town really is a mini Dubrovnik.

The most beautiful town along the coast was Trogir. Busy even in late September but much nicer than Dubrovnik. Full of small streets, stone arches, and restaurants everywhere. Not to be missed.

Sorry I can't be too much help to you, as you can gather my wife and I were on our own and getting away from it all.

I hope you enjoy your trip and that it gives your family a memorable holiday

Regards

John

We stayed in Hotel Palace which was a lovely modern hotel, well located and with it's own parking. Normally expensive but they had an offer in September. They're seemed to be enough options with some in the old city.

You'll love Trogir, sort of place you could imagine yourself and whoever you love staying for 6 months, reading, eating out, glass of wine, and strolling in athmosphere everywhere. ...... It's ok, I'm awake again !!

September is a good month to visit - it is still warm enough to eat outside in the evening without it being too warm as it is in July and August

Have a good trip !

Just back from korcula and this excellent review proved it's worth. These apartments are exactly as outlined, beautiful, quiet, peaceful and with lovely people. This really is why tripadvisor is so useful, helping to discover places that we would never have come across ourselves.
