What are the can't miss spots in Door County?

My girlfriend and I are taking our first trip to Door County and we were wondering what spots we have to visit while in the area.

Any suggestions for eating, hiking, fishing, shopping, etc would be much appreciated.

some must sees: Whitefish Dunes (see the singing sand at the dog part of the beach), Cave Point Cty. Park (next door to Whitefish), and Peninsula State Park.

eating: eat outdoors on surfboards here in Ephraim for breakfast:

http://www.goodeggsdoorcounty.com/ and next door for some sweet treats (great dipped oreos too) is Door County Confectionary. Wilson's Ice Cream Parlor for dessert (not food they're known for their desserts) is up the road from these two locations in Ephraim. White Gull Inn, in Fish Creek for their nationally recognized and award winning cherry stuffed French Toast breakfast. Go to Al Johnson's if you want to see the goats on the roof....

Musts: spend time in the villages of Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim, Siser Bay, and Bailey's Harbor, and Peninsula State Park. If you're active, hike the Eagle Trail, climb the Eagle Tower, and bike the Sunset Trail in Peninsula State Park. Rent bikes at Nor Door on US 42 in Fish Creek, near the entrance to the park.

Other than that, it depends on what you like to do. If you want more hiking, try the Skyline trail in Peninsula State Park, the Hotz/Europe Bay loop at Newport State Park (park off Europe Bay Road), or the Brachiopod trail and waterfront at Whitefish Dunes State Park and Cave Point County Park. Shopping-Fish Creek has the most shops, and they are open evenings. Fishing-try Weborg pier in Peninsula State Park or the Sister Bay marina. Nan and Jerry's bait shop in Fish Creek can help you with paticulars. Eating-that depends on your tastes. Stop at the Visitor Information center on Wis 42/57 as you go into Sturgeon Bay on your way up, and pick up a menu guide.

When are you coming and for how long? Where are you staying? What are you looking for in dining? Dining in D.C runs from burgers and beers at a bar to fine dining at some great places such as Inn at Kristoffers and Mission Grill. More info please.

We are staying at the birchwood lodge from sat to tue. We're pretty much open to any dining experience. I think we would like to attend a fish boil one evening and perhaps a "fancy" dinner one of the other nights.

You are within walking distance of what IMO are 3 of D.C's best restaurants, Inn at Kristoffers, Waterfront and Mission Grille. J.Js in Sister Bay has good Mexican food and for good bar food you have Husbys, Sister Bay Bowl and Northern Grill, all within walking as well. Just up the road to the north is the Viking Grill in Ellison Bay which offers a fish boil. For breakfast, Al Johnsons is good, look for the goats on the roof! For shooping make time for Fish Creek and Egg Harbor and as a previous poster said Cave Point Park is nice.

This is just my opinion, of course -- but you can't say you've been to Door County if you haven't eaten at "the place with the goats on the roof." That's right, Al Johnson's in Sister Bay. It's a tourist mecca, but it's also a decent restaurant, and a great place for breakfast (Swedish pancakes, yum!). Go on a weekday and avoid the crowds.

You also need to drive up to "the top of the thumb" (Gills Rock) and admire the views in Ellison Bay as you pass. While in Gills Rock, stock up on homemade jam at Bea's Ho-Made products. There's not a lot to do in Gills Rock, but you should go anyway.

Watch a sunset from any beach/park on the west side of the peninsula.

Go to a fish boil (any place other than the Sandpiper).

For a "fancy" dinner, go to the Mission Grille in Sister Bay. For a real old-fashioned "supper club" experience, go to the Greenwood in Fish Creek. If you want to have a beer (and maybe a burger) at a dive bar, visit the AC Tap on Route 57 in between Sister Bay and Baileys Harbor.

Another great breakfast and lunch place is the Village Cafe in Egg Harbor. We always go there at least once during a visit to Door County.

Take in a show at American Folklore Theatre, and while you're there, hike through the park.

Feeling nostalgic? Take in a movie at the Skyway Drive-In (north of Fish Creek).

Tour the Cana Island or Eagle Bluff lighthouses.

Pick cherries. Go wine-tasting.

Stargaze. Look for the northern lights. Take a late-night drive on the Rustic Road near Moonlight Bay in Baileys Harbor if the moon is full.

Get a map and take the back roads whenever possible. You'll see more of Door County that way, than if you always drive on routes 42 and 57.

There's no way you can *not* have fun in Door County. Too many enjoyable things to see and do. Have a good time, and post about your trip when you return!

I disagree with the negative comment above about the Sandpiper. I had their fish boil awhile ago. It was very good, and the service was excellent and the people could not have been nicer.

Since you are staying in Sister Bay, a good choice for a traditional supper club is the Sister Bay Bowl. Also, Ellison Bluff County Park is a good place for a hike.

If you have time, take the car ferry to Washington Island and continue out to Rock Island for some nice walks and interesting views. This will take the better part of the day and is not a must see, if your time is limited, but a nice diversion.

Ellison Blffs also offers some nice views and interesting short hikes and very few crowds.

We are coming in Sep just for the weekend. Not looking for fine dining but that can definitely be an add on. We are not looking for hiking trails I guess. More relaxing stuff.

Thanks everybody. i feel more knowledgeable already :)
