Go to Cafalu if your flying into Palermo, its easy to get to by train, has good beaches, good restaurants and some history and culture.

If your flying into catania, try the beaches between marina ragusa and marina modica.

You might also base in Trapani and then enjoy the beaches in Trapani town, San Vito Lo Capo, Favignana on the Egadi Islands....

I stayed in Castellammare for 2 weeks. It was great base to explore Western Sicily from as long as you have a rental car, but Vagabonda is correct that the beach is dirty. It had some good restaurants. It is close to the Zingaro Nature preserve that had some good beaches and beautiful scenery, but you need a car to get there.

Sicily is very different during the low season and in summer.

You wouldn’t require a car in summer to go from Castellammare del Golfo to Zingaro.

Russo runs seasonal service all the way to Zingaro in summer.

do you think 5 days in castelmare de golfo is too long without a car? We are in sicily for 2 weeks and were considering golfo the first week and a hire car in the second.

yes, I think 5 days in Castellammare without a car is too long. I am not sure why you would want to do that? Castellammare is not stressful to drive in and there are places to park a car.

Castellammare del Golfo is a convenient base with a car, but without a car, and most importantly seeking a beach holiday, Castellammare del Golfo is less than ideal for you. The beach is filthy in Castellammare del Golfo.
