Train availability to Lake Suwa

Hi, I will be traveling to Tokyo on May 7th for a week. Some time during that week, I'd like to go to sightseeing at Lake Suwa for a day. Will it be very hard to get a train ticket to there and back by the time I land at Narita? I will stay in Tokyo most of the time, so I don't take enough trains to make a JR pass is worth it.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Lake Suwa isn't particularly a popular tourist spot, but yes, you can do it (Okaya, Kamisuwa, and Sihimo-Suwa Stations then walk). There are hourly departures of Azusa train which connects these stations with JR Shinjuku Station in Tokyo.

The area is a bit built up as an industrial zone to become a tourist spot. Suwa is hometown of Seiko EPSON group.

You might go to Matsumoto to see the castle then also visit Narai post town on old Nakasendo Road. If you have time left, perhaps you might stop by at Lake Suwa.

That said, the most popular destination along the way West from Tokyo is Mt Fuji and Fuji Five Lakes.
