safety and security on tobago?

hi, i'm trying to plan a vacation to tobago ( jan. '14). the u.s. state dept web site isn't exactly painting a pretty picture of the island. it states a fairly high crime rate, with theift, armed robberry, even rape!! So, how concerned should i be? is it safe? i've vacationed on a good number of carribean islands and havn't seen quite this level of concern/caution for travelers. i will be traveling alone. also, what is the best spot for beaches? thanks, joe

Just returned. Safe and Friendly. you will have a lovely time but as with anywhere if you leave stuff lying about on a public beach it will get stolen.

Where have you got that figure of 500+ murders a year in Tobago. They have just had there first murder ever just before Xmas. Granted one murder is one to many. I bet you there is more crime in Hayling Island on any given Saturday night than in an entire year on Tobago. These crime figure are just plain wrong and can only come from combiining with Trinidad which has a high crime rate. To say that Tobago has a higher crime rate than Jamaica is just nuts.

I live in cornwall in the uk and we have crime ,but if you are sensible and firm with people you will have no problem .

Hi, I have been going to Tobago for many years. I have a good friend there and often stay with her or at the Coco Reef. Yes be careful, but you need to be cautious in any country. Be sensible, don't walk alone and don't befriend the locals that are all over you! Especially, if you are a single woman. If you are firm with the locals who talk to you and try to sell you things they soon go away.

It is a beautiful country, you just need to be sensible. People are murdered and raped in England.
