Self catering - where to shop, supermarkets near by??

Hello,

We are staying self catering and I wanted to know if there was a cheaper supermarket on the outskirts of PP or on our way from the airport that would make sense for us to visit on our way into the resort? Many thanks in advance

As you get closer to PP you will find a large supermarket called Eroski just off a big roundabout. You won't have to leave your route to find it. You'll have a vehicle full of luggage though so that would limit the amount and you may not be able to get a "big shop". We always hesitate to get our first grocery shop before we've seen where we are staying - apart from other practicalities you would have to leave the car (with luggage visible in it) plus if you have to pick up a key it means you have to find it (satnav or not) or possibly leave the groceries in the car while you sign paperwork etc and you're worried about the melting lollies and ice cream. A lot will depend on the time you arrive of course. There is also an Eroski in town (just a few streets from the Marina roundabout - 3 minute walk - no dedicated car park but you can park nearby) which is pretty big and has most everything a couple or family could want. The expensive ones are the mini supermarkets (they are simply corner shops) but they are handy too for forgotten items like dental floss and essentials like ice cream!

There is also the other Eroski a little further out of town on the main road, that has a Lidl next to it too (at least I think it is Lidl!!). As noted, the one in the centre is fine for day to day bits and pieces.

There is lots of lovely food at the market in the town square, like fresh fruit and veg and olives etc.

Someone with a better memory than me will have to tell you what day/days it's on. It could be a Wednesday, but on the other hand I might have just made that up!

Hippo that's a very good point and one of the lovely things about self catering. The market is Wednesday in Puerto Pollensa and there are nuts (particularly almonds), olives, olive oil, fruit, veg - all grown locally of course. Get there early as it gets pretty crowded. Lots of non-food items too of course - pottery, lace, leather (good quality), costume jewellery, local "pearls", we never get tired of it despite going so many times. The one in Pollenca (pretty sure that's Sunday) is worth seeing too but get there very early if you're driving.

Yes, its Sunday for the old town. We usually drive up about 10 and park on the outskirts. The walk up the 400 steps is good.....but buy a bottle of water at the bottom first!!

There is also a smaller supermarket in the middle of town. I've put some on a map.

We normally goto the one on the outside once or twice a week and then top up at the others. THe others are great as we can walk to them on the way back to the apartment etc.

Is the Spar still there? The one just along the road from the Playa Mar Apartments?

Yes and there are a number of other mini markets. Handy if you are staying a long walk from the centre but probably not a place you'd want to do a "big shop" for reasons of selection and price. The larger proper supermarket downtown is Eroski for your main shop or the even bigger one further out of town.

Rea66, we stay at the Playa Mar and use the Spa on the main road into town, good for fresh sandwiches, bread etc. For a large shop, we go to Eroski, stock up and get a taxi back at the start of the holiday.
